How to install network apps?
...wever, it seems
like most installations modify
the registry and seem to
demand a client-by-client installation.
Am I missing something on this?
Can someone provide me some hints
or references to help this?
(And is anyone thinking about a
SMS/ZEN type package for Samba/Unix?)
Thanks,
Bill

Again - backup WINS server?
Is there any way to set up a backup WINS
specification in dhcp/Win NT/Samba?
Having my WINS server go down the last
few days made this a little more desirable,
especially since when I noticed the service
was dead, I wasn't able to reboot it for a few
hours due to usage.
Thanks,
Bill

pam_smb authentication
I am appending some documentation by my colleague Bill Eldridge that was
actually written for our dial-up service, but should work for you
purposes as well. A couple notes.
1.)The user must exist in /etc/passwd on the Samba machine or login to
the Samba box will fail.
2.)In the example, we don't set up home directories for the users, we

rsync --server --daemon is listening on stdin?
Hi-
I've been trying to setup an rsync server on a WinXP box so that I can
sync files between my desktop and laptop. I'm starting rsync as:
rsync --server --daemon --no-detach .
from a command prompt.
but I can never connect to it -- even "telnet localhost 873" doesn't
work. It seems that rsync is listening on stdin, rather than listening
on a socket.
When I type at it

Browsing via dial-in
...it works consistently? I was trying
to stick to centralized server configs,
trying to avoid any Win client lmhost files,
with at most a WINS & use NetBIOS over TCP/IP
change, but at this point I'm willing to cash
in for something that works consistently every
time.
Thanks,
Bill

PDC/Net logon server
...s
PDC in both their smb.confs, had no
participation in domain browsing, etc.,
etc. The only thing I had running was
Net Logons (which I thought was needed
to have a Samba dial-in allow domain logins,
but after I turned it off, I realize I'm
wrong.
Why would Net Logons take over PDC?

Also, it's very good to encourage people to upgrade to

Logging on to the network - one samba, two subnets.
Hi.
I have Samba set up to serve W95 PCs. Kids "log in to the
network" using their Unix password. Students get their
Unix home dir mounted as network drive X: when login is
successful.
This all happens on IP subnet 192.168.1.1/24
So far, so good.
We are thinking about adding another IP subnet - say
192.168.2.1/24. Of course, the two subnets will be
connected with a router. It

Can't smbmount with samba-2.0
Hello,
I have a script on a production system at work that mounts an NT-exported
share for NFS re-export to some NFS-only clients. The system was RedHat-4
and samba 1.9, and used the following style command line (names have been
changed to protect the innocent :-)
smbmount //host/share /mnt/point -c HOST -U user -P passwd \
-u nobody -g nobody -f 666 -d 777
Now the system has been upgraded to

Multivariate random forests in R - how to obtain variance explained for multiple responses in randomForestSRC package - or other package

If anyone has any experience of this package ? or how to achieve this in other packages I?d love to hear from you.
Hopefully I am missing something obvious.
Cheers,

reconnecting
If asterisk is running as a daemon (started with no
command line options), can I reconnect to it and get
the vvverbose info in the console? In other words,
will
asterisk -rvvvc
work? Sorry to ask.... I would just try it to see if
it works, but I don't have an installation handy and
have to do some remote troubleshooting soon.
ThanksE+06.

Domain logon from behind proxy...
I think this has been addressed a few times,
but without quite satisfactory results.
I have a private subnet behind an NAT
proxy server (IPMASQ), and a public subnet
on the other side with the NT PDC on the public.
(Using both NetBEUI & TCP/IP). The PDC
will change later, but currently I'm trying to
find out how this all works before I do that.
I'm trying to make a client machine on

I know this is off-topic to the list, but someone asked me to make the

the list.
So, here it is.
Basically, after a search on dejanews, I came across this article:

Dial in accounts
Eric,
I am busy trying to grasp the browse list concept. We have subnets and
dial-in accounts. From what I have read you may have to get your Linux
box act as aWINS server and have to dial-up user use the wins server to
resolve names on the brows list. The browse list is updated every 12-15
minutes ao your dial-up account might not show upat first. This has
caused me some trouble at first as I

security=server and need to have users at linux too
Hi everybody,
I have set up a Linuxbox with Samba and security=server in smb.conf.
So far this works, the users are authenticated on the NT-Server as they
shuold but then they´re mapped to guest user. When I create the User on my
linux box with the same username as on the NT-Server it works OK, no matter
what password this user has on the linux box.
The real problem is, that I don´t like the Idea

Failed Logins (ntang@rga.com)
Nicholas:
Regarding your problem:
"The SGI server is only serving files, no home directories, no printers (we have separate NT servers for each of those
functions), and it is using "SERVER" level security. Encryption is on. Guest logins are disabled
...
I'm confused greatly by this - one day, a user's login will work, another day, it'll suddenly stop working. "
