Monitoring/controlling the print spool
I crossed few similar questions in the digest and the news group, however I didn't cross the solution. I set a Linux Slackware as a samba server (16p11) with HP LJ attached to its parallel port. The server takes care of the print jobs too well; The server spool simply swallows print jobs. What should be the set up to let an MS user (95/wfw) monitor ("lpq") and control

Configuration Query
I'm looking at using Linux/Samba in a lab environment. What I'd like is for the Win95 Machines to connect as the default guest user normally, ie read-only. But, if I log in as let's say, SambaAdmin, it prompts for a password and will allow writing to that shared resource. I've tried a couple of different settings, but regardless of how I log into the Microsoft Client, it will

Force group on create of a file.
Howdy, Is it psoible to use a force group on creation of a file or directory only? I want to use this to make a more efficient use of unic permissions. If I use 'Force Group' then I cannot use the 'other' permission rights anymore in unix. I use a debian distribution (2.1) with Samba version 1.9.18p10-7 Any ideas? Grezzz Ries van Twisk

Samba 1.9.17 server is not showing up in PDC browser list.
Hi, I've just upgraded to Samba 1.9.17, but I can't get my samba server that resides in a differnet subnet to show up in the PDC's browse list. I've got samba configured as the local browse master and am registering with the wins server with: domain master = no local master = yes preferred master = yes os level = 65 wins support = no

Samba and Command Software AntiVirus (F-Prot)
...ook at? With Network virus checking turned of the problem is not visible although we do seem to be getting a number of complaints about corrupt documents. With Network virus checking turned on the same operations to an NT 4.0sp4 server share work fine. Any suggestions would be welcome . michael@ecel.uwa.edu.au ECEL, The University of Western Australia

"invalid users = nobody" is bad
...y way to stop this was to make the invalid users list include the guest account (i.e. nobody). I believe that "guest ok = no", the default, correctly handles this case now. I assume there is some kind of race condition within samba when "invalid users = nobody" is set. michael@ecel.uwa.edu.au

Upgrading 2.2.0 to 2.2.2
I have a stabily running Samba 2.2.0 operation in place. I've very happy and for once don't have to fight with a box to do file sharing. I've worked around some issues I've got (like ownership and ACLs) that are not directly samba problems, in fact they are probably Administrator problems. However, I've reached an impass. I can no longer use 2.2.0 because the big beast of

Unable to add a second user
Hello everyone! I'm a brand new user to Samba. I've installed the 64-bit version on a Sun E-450, running Solaris 8. I had no trouble getting the software installed and running, but I can't add any additional users. The first user I added, myself, works fine. I have mounted 2 different shares. However, I can't add any other users. My procedure for adding users is to: 1) use the

Random Directories
I believe this a virus on one of the work stations, but I want to just make sure because no of the virus scans are picking it up. I just built the largest Linux server I ever attempted (725 Gigs in RAID5). I convinced my client to move from Micro$oft. Everything was working perfectly during tests. In operation they are getting random directories made (1000s of them) in the shared folders.

Client on dos
I need to use a samba server (linux redhat 6.0 ) from a diskless dos machine ( has a floppy drive for booting) . So i need a very little tcp-ip stack for dos and a client for a NT server on dos so that they will be small enough to be on a 1.44 system floppy. Is that possible ? Paul

Share shows up but is not accessible.
In Windows explorer the computer (Penguin) and share (Ring) show up, but when I try to access the share, I get the following message: \\Penguin\Ring is not accessible The share name was not found. Be shure you typed it correctly. I have Samba set up on another Linux machine (OldPenguin) in the same network, and it works fine. Both computers run Red Hat 7.1 and Samba 2.0.7 (which came

issues with version 2.2.2
Hi -- Does anyone have any strong comments either positively or negatively about the new version 2.2.2 running on Solaris 2.7 or 2.6? I have been running version 2.2.1 since August and have been having some really unusual behavior with random denial for some users from some machines at random times. Is there any evidence that 2.2.2 might help with this? --
