Debian Woody r-base depends on blas2 (PR#1089)
...39;Donnell Version: 1.3.1-1 OS: Linux, Debian Woody distribution Submission from: (NULL) (64.34.17.133) I tried to install the R packages for the Debian GNU/Linux Woody distribution. I added "deb http://cran.r-project.org/bin/linux/debian woody main" to my /etc/apt/sources.list, and ran dselect with the apt-get method. I selected all of the R packages that I could find. The installation appeared to fail, because r-base and r-recommended both depend on blas2. I cannot find a Debian package for blas2 in the Debian archives, nor in the CRAN archives. blas1 is in the Debian archives for both...

failure of status 127
...de update (and upgrade) Daniel: As you migth remember, I got the error "failure of status 127" as on last June 10 (on that occasion following apt-get update and upgrade) At that time the remedy was: #apt-get remove libwine followed by #apt-get install libwine Now I prefer aptitude or dselect, so that yesterday #aptiture update (and upgrade), by which much of wine was modified (I did not take notice of) I got the same error 127, and applications did not launch. The remedy was: #aptiture remove libwine answering: Downgrading wine [0.9.12-1 testing now) -> 0.9.12~winehq1-1 (<NULL...

Debian way of compiling zaptel kernel modules
I ran "apt-get -b source zaptel-source" to download and compile the zaptel source. It successfully compiles and builds the following packages: libtonezone-dev_1.0.2-2_i386.deb libtonezone1_1.0.2-2_i386.deb zaptel-source_1.0.2-2_all.deb zaptel_1.0.2-2_i386.deb None of them contain the kernel modules. Is there a way I can get it to compile the kernel modules? Thanks, Geoff

Debian samba 2.2.3-12.3 explosive memory growth
...red K to as much as 2-4 megs every single time a directory is listed and occasionally when a file accessed by a Windows 2000 client? Eventually the process becomes so large that linux kills it, disrupting processes that are trying to access data at the time. This behavior started after I used dselect to install some package upgrades on my Debian system, but I am about 99% positive that samba was not among the packages upgraded. The behavior has persisted through a restart of samba and a reboot of the system. Debian 3.0 woody, samba 2.2.3a-12.3. uname -a: Linux datacube 2.4.22 #1 Wed Aug 2...

"Best" Out of box Linux distro for R
At the risk of starting a holy war, I'd like opinions on the "best" current Linux distribution to run "out of box" with current versions of R. I note rpms for various versions of RedHat, SUSE, Mandrake, and Debian. I've had experience with RH 7.1 & 7.2 and it hasn't been entirely pretty. I understand that 7.3 is a bit "better", but have also
