I've recently installed Debian/GNU Linux 2.2. The R package on the debian website and Official CD is 0.90.x, so I checked cran for a more recent deb package, with the following result. homebrew:~# apt-get install r-base Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should be filed. The following information may help to resolve the situation: Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies: r-base: Depends: atlas2 but it is not installable Depends: tk8.0 (>= 8.0.5) but it is not installable E: Sorry, broken packages Can someone tell me if this is a problem with the deb package on cran or some problem of mine? I've frequently used apt-get in the past (though not for R) and had no problems. -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- r-help mailing list -- Read http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/~hornik/R/R-FAQ.html Send "info", "help", or "[un]subscribe" (in the "body", not the subject !) I've frequently used apt-get in the past (though not > for R) and had no problems.I have recently installed the R 1.1.1 from the deb-package on cran (on Debian 2.2) so I don't think there is a problem with the deb-package. I didn't use apt-get, though; I downloaded the r-base-foo.deb manually and installed with dpkg. The atlas2 and other packages that r-base depended on, I installed with dselect. I encountered no problems during the process. -- B/H -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- r-help mailing list -- Read http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/~hornik/R/R-FAQ.html Send "info", "help", or "[un]subscribe" (in the "body", not the subject !) I guess it should be the same for R-1.1.1. You need gcc and XFree86 (the versions distributed with Debian 2.2 are fine). I have also tcl/tk installed, and the examples in R's demos run correctly. You may need to move to unstable to use the latest R, or at least upgrade some parts of your stable system manually. Be aware that unstable tends to be just that and it's not a move to take lightly. It would be nicer if someone would build a package of the latest R against debian-stable if possible and put that in CRAN. (I can't as my statistics machines don't run debian any more. Besides, I hate building debs.) -- MJR Please note changes of address http://stats.mth.uea.ac.uk/ -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- r-help mailing list -- Read http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/~hornik/R/R-FAQ.html Send "info", "help", or "[un]subscribe" (in the "body", not the subject !) I've frequently used apt-get in the past (though not > for R) and had no problems.I had the same or similar problem. I don't really remember what I did, but it's rather a debian problem. I think I did apt-get install atlas2 and so on (I installed anew whatever made problems) and then it worked.
