I didn't see anything in the instructions that were specific to running
on a DC, and in any case, we can afford to be a little less dogmatic
about this. Please don't go trawling the wiki one way or the other.
To be clear: I'm happy with the statement currently on the wiki:
Whilst the Domain Controller seems capable of running as a full file
server, it is suggested that organisations run a distinct file server
to allow upgr...

Installation of Rails without ''gem install rails''
I am wondering if anyone has any procedural documentation for installing
and using Rails from the standalone packages rather then via ''gem
install''. It seems there should be some steps outside of simply
unpacking the tar ball in order to integate it with your Ruby
installation. Seems every bit of installation documentation I can find
has ''gem install

backticks
I noticed just now that
package.skeleton() produces R files in which
the function names are escaped with backticks.
?Quotes says that "The preferred quote is the backtick (`)",
but I don't understand _why_ this is preferred.
?formula gives some clues but points out that there
are no guarantees that formulae using non-syntactic names such as
`like this` will be accepted.

Thunderbird problem
Hello
Some users had occasionally a problem with Thunderbird , some random
emails with attachement(s) cannot be read anymore
the email appears empty and TB seems to enter in an infinite loop
saying it is downloading the message
The only solution I found was :
1 - stop thunderbird on the client machine
2 - remove the .imap user's directory
3 - restart thunderbird on the client machine

Remove data 3 standard deviatons from the mean using R?
Hi Everyone,
I have a very long list of data-points (+2300) and i know from my histogram
that there are outliers which are affecting my mean.
I was wondering if anyone on here knows a way i can quickly get R to
calculate and remove data which is 3 standard deviations from the mean? I am
hoping this will tidy my data and give me a repeatable method of tidying for
future data collection.

[Stories] Login and subdomain
I''ve just begin using rspec stories, and i m encountering some
problems. In my application i have different subdomains in which
specific users can log in, for example an admin will go to
admin.myapp.com/authenticate/login, and an user belonging to a
specific company will log in company.myapp.com/authenticate/login, and
of course both have a different login process.

no less than top-posting does. I am unaware of any scientific study
that purports to support either position. So, in the absence of that
I conclude:
De gustibus non est disputandum.
At this point the practice, particularly for archived mailing lists,
is little more than dogmatic adherence to a style that serves only to
distinguish the 'in group' from the 'other'.

...ept certain changes, (large or small) to the workflow. The big
challenge here isn't technical, it's mindset. It's convincing any
group of people who object that it won't be as painful to them as they
think. (I hope this is a true statement)
#if - there's a group of people are : dogmatic, stubborn and
unreasonable - others outside that group should decide how to deal
with them: ignore, coddle, placate or other.
I don't think there's a perfect technical solution to make everyone
happy - I think focusing on the social engineering will be an equal or
greater importance. (he...

whatever happend to unobtrusive javascript in Rails ?
...#39;m now again faced with with a dilemma in Rails: Here is a
framework that is all about beautiful code and strict separation, yet
i suppose to just throw out all good intentions on the client side?
I also don''t think the above concepts are superficial, contrived or
inappropriately dogmatic. There are tremendous real-life benefits and
in some cases they even become necessities. There''s also a more
metaphysical aspect - if you will - the immense satisfaction of
looking at squeaky clean xhtml source, yet "invisibly" enhanced by
advanced DOM-scripting functio...

Bug or feature: WEBrick threading (vs script/console thread)
I don''t know whether this is a bug or feature, and I don''t know whether
this belongs to Gmailer (http://rubyforge.org/projects/gmailutils) in
specific or Rails/Ruby in general.
I have an instance method in an ActiveRecord model, that upon a web
request using WEBrick, spawns off a thread, in which it invokes Gmailer
to perform some processing. What fails is that simply

[RFC] One or many git repositories?
One other point about maintaining branches:
With the single repository approach, maintaining a long-running branch
that touches multiple subprojects (e.g. llvm and clang) becomes *far*
simpler.
With the umbrella repo, you have to do the submodules trickery I
described in the original e-mail. It is complicated, and takes a lot
of typing (or requires you to develop custom scripts). But with the
