but what about non-gpt and non lvm partitions?
What is used as inp
nut to create a universally unique id?
(Actually, for an id to be universally unique, one would almost
nee knowledge of all existing id's.
So, I do not have much credence in this universal uniqueness.

problems with apache 2.2 proxying to mongrel cluster
...luster in
debug mode and am going to just let it sit there for several hours
until it happens again and hopefully get some idea of where the
breakdown is happening. I still think it has to be a mysql connection
timeout but again, the fact that 1 of the 4 always works doesn''t lend
credence to the timeout theory.
Has anyone experienced this phenomenon themselves?
Thanks for any tips/pointers and thanks Zed for all your hard work
with mongrel.

rails vs. nodejs
I am going to make an opinionated comment here. This is just my
opinion and everyone has one.
I think rails is the best framework out there. But I think all these
frameworks do not solve any actual problems. They just abstract
problems to simpler forms. On the other hand nodejs actually created
a new and revolutionary way to develop web applications easily. Almost
like writing a simple script.

...eve that my system will *reduce the work* and *improve
the experience* of the majority of LLVM developers. The cost we are
paying for this gain is (a) my time, and (b) a python dependency. As I
said before, we already have (b) for running tests, which no one who
has complained about this have given credence to. In my opinion,
although this adds a new system, but it is actually reducing
complexity because the system becomes (a) better documented, (b) more
understandable, and (c) more explicit.

Sufficiently random gets you there, since you're not connecting billions of
filesystems to a single system. If you really want to generate them by hand,
feel free, as mkfs.ext4 lets you specify the filesystem UUID.
I think you're finding a problem where one...

I thought that uuid had nothing to do with drive content,
so dd would have (should have had) nothing to do with it.

mentality, ego issues or need to walk on water in the eyes of anyone, I
avoided the trap. But the thread started to go that way regardless. I
like to feel that my behavior contributed to its early death.
*All* of this is unnecessary and childish.
Example: as minor background to lend credence to a possibility that had
been proposed, I mentioned that I had worked on UNIX systems since way
back when. Not waving my ego or trying to denigrate anyone else's POV or
credentials, just supporting an assertion that there had been a time

How do I get my IT department to "bless" R?
I currently use R at work "under the radar", but there's a chance I
could loose that access. I'd like to get our company to feel
comfortable with open source and R in particular. Does anyone have
any experience with their company's IT department and management that
they would be willing to share? How does one get an all Microsoft

Is there anyone out there who has run Factor Analysis with R?

makepkg.sh for samba 3.0.20
Hi,
I downloaded 3.0.20 from samba.org, ran makepkg.sh to create
samba pkg for Solaris. The install base for the new version
locates in /opt/samba and the smbd locates in /etc/samba.
I tried to modify the makepkg.sh to put everything under
/usr/local/samba as follow:

--localstatedir=/var/lib/samba \
--with-piddir=/var/run \
