Audit Trail/Logging For Network Logons and Logoffs
Hi Folks, I have searched the archives and the web for this issue, but I haven't found an answer. I need to be able to log or audit the network access of our network users. This information needs to be used in conjuction with a time and attendance punch clock. I have seen much discussion of using preexec and postexec for obtaining a network access log. However, my testing has shown this as unreliable. It seems Windows logs in and logs out at (nearly) random and the collected information seems useless as I haven&...

Query: Filesystems
Hello, Just a few quick, but not very simple questions...: Do any Linux filesystems (besides XFS) support freezing? (ie. in conjuction with LVM snapshots this can allow a mounted filesystem to be frozen [freezing all processes writing to this filesystem] in a valid state (with possibly dangling unlinked files), the device can be snapshotted via LVM, and the original filesystem unfrozen - the snapshot now contains a valid snapshot...

How do I provide redundancy and reliability w/ Asterisk?
I'm trying to set up an Asterisk system for a small office, and one thing I haven't figured out yet is how to best provide reliability. One way to go seems to be a T1 for all my incoming phone lines. What if that T1 goes down? Can I use mutiple POTS lines in conjuction with a T1, all connecting to my Asterisk server? What if my Asterisk server fails? Should I use two Asterisk servers, one connected to the T1 and one to the POTS lines? Thanks, P. -- Philip J. Hollenback philiph@pobox.com http://www.hollenback.net

LaTeX, MiKTeX, LyX: A Guide for the Perplexed
...hs. Read several books and have learned a great deal about data manipulation, statistical analysis, and graphics.   Now I want to learn how to make nice looking documents and about "literate programming." My understanding is that R users normally do this using LaTeX, MiKTeX, LyX, etc. in conjuction with Sweave. An alternative might be to use the R2wd package to create Word documents.   So I guess I have four questions:   1. How do I choose between the various options? Why would someone decide to use LaTeX instead of MiKTeX or vice versa for example?   2. What are the best sources of informat...

LDA/Posfix error: bounce, user unknown
Hello, I am trying to get LDA working in conjuction with Postfix, but whenever I activate Dovecot LDA in main.cf and send myself a test messsage, I get an error message in maillog: [...] May 8 20:47:17 venus postfix/pipe[36077]: 4022B5C38: to=<cb at lim.nl>, orig_to=<colin at lim.nl>, relay=dovecot, delay=0.02, delays=0.01/0/0/0.01, ds...

stricter use of xlim in plot.stepfun
...I want to add a stepfun to an existing plot: plot(c(0, 50), c(0, 10), type = "n") lines(sf, xlim = c(0,10)) The left and right ends of the line drawing are chosen quite arbitrary instead of using the exact xlim information. In the code of plot.stepfun it is the variable 'dr' in conjuction with ti <- c(xlim[1L] - dr, knF, xlim[2L] + dr) which determine and alter the x-range of the stepfun internally. What do you think of this issue? Best regards, Sebastian Meyer

Asterisk Calling Card Platform
Can anyone tell me if there is a Calling Card Platform in which I can use in conjuction with Asterisk that can give me Authentication via the caller id of the user. I don't want a PIN based Calling Card system, but the software to be able to recognize the caller ID information and authenticate the users and allow them to call through the asterisk box. Thanks.

Lala music mover throws many errors
I am trying to run the Lala music mover (it works in conjuction with Lala.com, a legal music sharing service). I've managed to tweak Wine enough to work it to a certain point in the wizard (this was a few months ago) but it throws back some errors about unimplimented functions. The console trace is HUGE so I didn't want to post it to the list right of...

smbldap_tools
Hi all, I am having a problem getting samba ldap tools to work. I am running Mandrake 10.0 community and have installed ldap and samba to use to work in conjuction as a samba domain server. It has automatically install the smbldap tools for user and group creation and modifications. Samba 3.0.24-6etch10 - symlinks on Linux clients
Samba 3.0.24-6etch10 on Debian Etch. I have really simple samba configuration, on per user principle, (no domain, no wins ..). Some parts of disk conjucted using symlinks, which are working well, if I using windows clients. Linux clients see these as broken symlinks. I'm does not found any information/suggetion how to change this behavior. I suspect (only) that is it about additional unix

dovecot, vpopmail and djb's tcpserver
Hello! I've tried to set up dovecot in conjuction with vpopmail, and running it under djb's tcpserver instead of (x)inetd. Btw - there was no reference to setting dovecot up using (x)inetd either in the manuals/faqs i read, though I didn't search all that hard. Anyway, back to my Q: vpopmail uses vchkpw as an authentication mechanism, an...

coxph and frailty
Hi: I have a few clarification questions about the elements returned by the coxph function used in conjuction with a frailty term. I create the following group variable: group <- NULL group[id<50] <- 1 group[id>=50 & id<100] <- 2 group[id>=100 & id<150] <- 3 group[id>=150 & id<200] <- 4 group[id>=200 & id<250] <- 5 group[id>=250 & id<...

What do YOU do to catch undefined variables
I''m still a puppet newbie and these days I''m struggling with undefined variables. At least once a week I hit an error message like this: Error: Failed to apply catalog: '''' is not qualified and no path was specified. Please qualify the command or specify a path. IMO, the core issue is that Puppet has no mechanism for reporting read attempts on

message status changed from new to old on read
Hi. I'm new to IMAP, but just tried uw-imapd and then dovecot in conjuction with offlineimap. I'm using Debian package version 0.99.14-1 and have my mail in mbox format. One of the first things that annoys me about both programs is that as soon as you read a mailbox over imap, the imapd changes all "new" messages to "old". It seems to have the as...

Two file mode bugs in puppet 0.25?
I''m using puppet 0.25.5 and just discovered two file resource bugs. I suspect the bugs did not exist in 0.24 because the code were using that triggers them has been the same for a long time and while it is possible we did not notice the problem earlier, it seems unlikely as it has been triggering failures in our automated system tests since around the time we upgraded. Anyway,

Hmisc & latex
Hmisc includes a latex function which typesets objects in latex. A great time saver. I am using it to create a large number of tables in a loop in conjuction with prettyNum to place '000s separators in the numbers (i.e. 1,000,000 not 1000000). This converts the numbers to strings. The Hmisc/latex default is to left justify characters - which doesn't work in this case. Hmisc/latex seems to have lots of options, but not one that I was expecting...

Database of event activity
...r.c. We would also need to have a unique EventID logged with each event so that we would know that we have processed that event already. Again, I know that there are other ways of identifying the event (at the moment I do a crc of the event "packet" and compare it with my database in conjuction with the UniqueID of the channel being "evented"), but that's very messy. Does anyone have any thoughts ? Julian.
