RE: pronunciation? -- loving CentOS doesn't mean you have to bash Red Hat
...> Now I didn't actually mind PAYING for RHEL, of course not, but I just > find they need to find a sweet spot price for those that may not need > the install/configuration support (like me), Haven't you see the $99 Red Hat Professional Workstation / Red Hat Desktop at your local CompUSA? It's RHEL WS in a shrink wrap package. > or the SLAs, but want the lifecycle the product delivers and the stability > it offers. Is $340 per year worth it for that? Actually, subscriptions are just $179/year. I haven't checked to see if it's only $99 for people who buy the r...

Custom kernel needed for ndiswrapper? (for Linksys WPC54G wireless pcmcia)
.... Has anyone had a problem using the Linksys WPC54G Cardbus adapter + Centos-4 and NOT had to use a custom kernel? For that matter, since I haven't purchased the card yet, can I get a recommendation or two about a workable wlan cardbus (g) adapter that could most likely be found at Best Buy/CompUSA/Fry's ? I'd like to be able to easily return the card if things don't work... I did some searching a decent card and it seems that a number of good wlan chipsets are discontinued or hard to find, so I'm slightly confused as to what to get. Thank you. Michael Chinn

64-bit Windows advanced server 2003 hangs
I just had the unpleasant experience of crashing a production server _twice_ when trying to access a file share. The server is 64-bit Windows 2003 on an itanium3. My box is RedHat Linux 8.0 with Samba 3.0.0-2. Here's some messages from syslog: Mar 19 09:13:58 hedron automount[1037]: attempting to mount entry /dborg/POS Mar 19 09:13:58 hedron mount.smbfs[23153]: [2004/03/19 09:13:58, 0]

Re: pronunciation? -- loving CentOS doesn't mean you have to bash Red Hat
...8.0 and RHL9 were "missing" a few things that suddenly "reappeared" later with FC1. Most developers wanted the "shackles off" because RHEL was now the "SLA" product, and RHL was just the incubator for that product now. There was also the continuing nags from CompUSA and other resellers about selling a product that is outdated every 6 months. The result is that Red Hat Linux was deprecated to a project, no longer a product. Vendors largely stopped certifying on RHL after RHL7.3 as the announcements came that updates would only be released for 1 year. Then th...

Installation failure
I'm trying to reinstall CentOS on a machine I've reconditioned for it, but for reasons I can't fathom, when the installation disk comes up and prompts for the install type, and I type either <enter> (graphics isntall) or "linux text"<enter>, after it loads the initrd image, the machine shuts off. It's an older machine I built myself (and ran CentOS on for a

The Sims
I have a copy of the Sims installed on a Win2k FAT32 partition. I know for a fact that The Sims works under Wine (Mandrake's "Gamer" edition), but I get an error when I try to run it. The error is as follows: "Game cannot be started because: There is not enough memory or hard drive space to run. Exit now." I do have plenty of free space and plenty of memory. Does

Speed/lockup problems with wireless client
Hi, I have samba running on a home LAN using a Linksys mixed wired (100 Mbit ethernet) & wireless access point, which also does NAT to a DSL modem. The server is connected to this access point via an ethernet cable. Clients can connect via wireless or wired network connection. I am using encrypted passwords, and have in smb.conf: socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=4096

OT: Avoiding harddisk failure due to mobility
Hi All, I need some advice on finding a solution to this problem . I have a hard disk mounted on a mobile robot. I am using ext3 fs. The hard disk is subjected to several bumps as the robot travels. I am experiencing frequent hard disk failure ( about once a month). I have thought about 2 different solutions to this problem. I would appreciate any tips on evaluating them 1) Use Compact Flash

locks on read-only files from windows share?
*** Authentication Certificate *** We are reasonably sure that until recently we could do a "tail -f" on a file on a share from windows mounted on linux 2.4x (samba 2.2+), and processes on windows had no problem writing to that file while we saw the output scroll in the tail. We suspect some Windows OS patch recently changed this behavior, so that now any windows process fails to write
