Hello, This may be a really stupid question, but can a gel type marine battery be used in a UPS? Thanks

Gelcells are different than the sealed lead acid batteries found in UPS''s. They have different charging requirements, and will discharge differently than SLAs. Probably best to purchase replacement batteries from the manufacturer... HTH Thanks! APC has a program called "ChargeUPS" or somesuch that sends you replacement batteries and allows you to send your old batteries back to them "freight pre-paid" so you don''t have to deal with disposing of them properly (which can be a pain in the behind in some areas). It seems shipping for the battery is about as much as the battery itself. Do you know a particular model of APC that is compatible with CentOS? Thanks!!

If by "compatible" you mean it will come with software that will work with CentOS so that you can do automated shutdowns and whatnot, I''m really not sure of the status of those tools for Linux in general, and CentOS in particular. That''s the only "compatibility" issue I can think of. Also, I wouldn''t buy a used UPS without a battery. You have absolutely no way of knowing whether it works. CompUSA and Staples have recently been selling brand new SmartUPS 1500 units for $199. Even if the used one is FREE, I''d still pay the $199 to get a known good UPS with a warranty. Cheers,

Very easy to configure.

We have a local store here called "batteries plus" - it''s a franchise. They had pretty good pricing on batteries for my APC UPSes. A bit more than cheap website prices i found, but shipping batteries is expensive.

Very easy to configure....but i think not compatible with all APC models. Check before you buy. danno -- dan pritts - systems administrator - internet2 734/352-4953 office 734/834-7224 mobile

Looks like a unit with USB support may be the way to go. I just want a simple shutdown and restart when power resumes for my server. It would be nice to have a model on the network to shutdown all my PCs (4) on my local network but that may be a little too pricey for me. It''s a little fuzzy as to whether each would need a APC card or just need to be running the APC software. How does that work? Thanks

If you open your UPS and get the model # from the old battery or the AmpHour, voltage, and physical size. You can usually find replacement batteries cheaper than a comparable replacement battery kit for your UPS.

You can usually > find replacement batteries cheaper than a comparable > replacement battery kit for your UPS.Hello, My UPS died a while back and I was wanting to get another. Thought I could buy a used one w/o batteries to save on shipping and buy the new batteries locally but haven''t had much luck getting/finding a battery or batteries locally at a resonable price. I saw an APC BR1200 at Office Depot for $149 that may work if its compatible with the APC Network Shutdown software for Linux. If not, it does have the serial port and should be compatible with apcupsd. Thanks
apcupsd can run in master slave config: one node has a connection to the UPS, the rest is configured as slave.
