Using raid 1 for rollback purposes
...a means of providing a
rollback mechanism for an upgrade (which I learned from others long
ago). So essentially, before an upgrade you split the mirrors and
upgrade one side or the other. If your upgrade goes well you sync one
way, if your upgrade does not you sync the other (much hand waving and
chanting going on, as its more complicated than that, but that is the
essence of the solution).
Recently, I was asked to do the same thing but with a raid 1+0
solution. Its easy,
enough to break the raid 1 volumes underneath, but then how do I use
the broke off volumes to form the duplicate strip. Pic...

find_window_by_xxx doesn''t find Gauge or BitmapButton
I''m fairly new to the Ruby world, particularly WxRuby, so please
forgive me if this is ground that''s been covered in the past. I''m
trying to load a frame from an XRC file (created using DialogBlocks),
and I''m having trouble getting an instance of the Gauge object using
the Wx::Window.find_window_by_xxx methods. I''m trying this on Windows

Still need help with ticket triage
As everyone probably realizes, I''m getting swamped with incoming
problems and tickets and I still need help triaging the tickets.
James Turnbull has volunteered to help some, but I think we need more
than one person. We''ve had a few people step in once or twice, but
I''d like to be able to depend on Unreviewed tickets getting handled
by someone else, rather

Making an HTTP request to an external machine
During one of my controller actions I want to call an external machine
before I do anything. It''s not a real web service, more like a
REST-style thing where I''ll just be tweaking a servlet running on
another machine and sending it some data.
Does Rails give me anything to work with for doing that? I read the web
service stuff but it''s overkill for what I need. I

An idea: add RYUL to Rails
Dear Friends,
I''d like to have a development suggestion for Rails.
Rails is an amazing framework, and clearly it''s weakest link is that it
relies on HTML in the end, which is not always the most appropriate GUI out
there. Another option could be XUL. Mozilla-based browsers (Firefox) can run
XUL apps right out of the box, others could use the XULRunner application.
Here you can

Execution DOS exe program via Wine ?
Hi,
Could you tell me if I'm wrong ?
I've understood that Wine can run a dos EXE program under a linux/unix
environment : I launch Wine with proper arguments and with the program
name, and the magic happens...
Thus, if my program does some file input/ouput, will it also work ?
Will I be able to access the outputted file via my old bash ?
In fact, I would like to call an EXE DOS program

RHEL 6 <-> CentOS 6 ?
Hi !
We are curently deploying an 8 nodes cluster where we have a RHEL 6 license
at great costs (~14 k$/y). It will be our new production environment for
mission-critical services.
Now our aging developpement server (old p4 with 1.5 gig of ram) need to be
updated. We will be installing on hardware as close as possible to the new
production servers, just not in a rack...

machine network interfaces, dhcpd.conf, and zone files
I''m still thinking about how my puppet deployment will go. Right now,
I''m thinking each of my machines will have their network interfaces
defined/configured by puppet. But, I''d like to generate my zone files
and dhcpd.conf from this data as well.
How do people generally do this? I expect I''ll end up generating the
nodes.pp files from some database, but

At least they get their ISOs to boot from CD and USB stick alike.

"they" synonym for "it"?
I''ve noticed that I phrase a lot of shared behaviours in plural, eg
describe "All payment_details views"
How about a "they" alias to "it" so you can write
describe "All payment_details views", :shared => true do
they "should have a card number field" do

lasso based selection for mixed model
Dear useRs (called Frank Harrell, most likely),
after having preached for years to my medical colleagues to be cautious
with stepwise selection procedures, they chanted back asking for an
alternative when using mixed models.
There is a half dozen laXXX packages around for all types of linear models,
but as far I see there is none for mixed models such as lme. Even
boot.stepAIC (which I considered valid, but Frank objects) is not for
lme.
I found one SPSS ma...

Best Practice for Returning to Calling Page?
I have a partial, it''s a shopping cart display, it''s designed to appear
on several different pages of my site.
One of the buttons on the shopping cart empties the cart, and then I
want the calling page to redisplay.
In other words, the cart controller needs to return the visitor to the
same page -- however since the cart could appear on any given page, this
has to be
