Strangely enough, that was my very first thought when I read this. :P Don''t just take ZFS, take *everything*. I wonder why we both had this idea...... *hint hint* Cheers, David -------------- next part -------------- On 4/27/06, eric kustarz <eric.kustarz at sun.com> wrote:> > Here''s some exciting news! > > Chris Emura, the Filesystem Development Manager within Apple''s CoreOS > organization is interested in porting ZFS to OS X. This is a re-occuring theme, and unfortunately never seems to pan out. There is always speculation about apple/sun buyouts lingering, it rears it''s head every once in a while. It seems people generally acknowledge Solaris as king of the server world and loser when it comes to usability/desktop. Visa versa for Apple. This makes a very obvious case for combination. I doubt you''ll ever see a company-buyout due to company differences, but maybe with some major voodoo chanting there is a .0001% chance you''ll see OSOL based OSX. It''s nice to dream, anyways... No doubt it would be great to have ZFS on OS X not just for its pooling but also compression, transactions etc. It would be great not having to tool around with "disk repair" and fscking the file system all the time. The endian neutrality will also be a bonus for the transition period in which there will be customers running ppc and x86 for at least the next 2 - 3 years. oh...and one of the number one gripes is when mac users compare OS X and windows and we have nothing to compete with the "restore points" feature. I''m sure a pretty interface to zfs rollback wont be to difficult for the ineterface team. This message posted from opensolaris.org
