Samba newbie question...
Can Samba be used as a complete replacement for a Windows 2000 Active Directory server? I have some vague notion that this can be accomplished by using a combination of OpenLDAP, Samba, MIT Kerberos, and the OpenAFS file system. To say the least, the descriptions I have found have been vague as to whether or not I will be able to completely replace the functionality of an Active Directory server

<p>I don't know the answer, but here are suggestions to the limit of my knowledge:
1) Is your sound going in via Line In, or Mic In?
2) Do you get the noise when recording, using ANY software (just record a wav file with something)? If...

Samba Newbie
I'm in the process of beginning to set up Samba with the aid of the book
Special Edition Using Samba. The problem that I have is that I cannot
get the service to run.
I am using Red Hat 7.2 - kernel 2.4.9-13.
I modified the smb.conf file and get the following when running the
"testparm" command:
Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf

I don't know what else to suggest, but I think this information would help you (or anyone who tries to help you).
Cheers,
Scott

I think the problem is with fbsd's sb live driver.

[Bug 177] New: chroot tools for OpenSSH 3.1p1
...-current
Platform: Other
URL: http://cag.lcs.mit.edu/~raoul/.
OS/Version: other
Status: NEW
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P3
Component: sshd
AssignedTo: openssh-unix-dev at mindrot.org
ReportedBy: nkadel at bellatlantic.net
I've updated and modified some older OpenSSH chroot tools to work correctly
with OpenSSH 3.1p1. I'd like to get them integrated into the code base, in
strong preference to that ghods-awful "chroot" shell scripting done by ssh-3.x.
The patch modifies OpenSSH to do a chroot...

chroot would be nice to have, but having sshd chroot for /./ in $HOME
is not a standard behaviour.

Printing problem. (nmb related??)
Hi Folks,
I've been using linux for the past 4 years. I'm currently running RH 6.2
and samba 2.0.6.
My goal has been to eliminate MS from my computer and I'm almost there. I'm
trying to use samba to allow printing to my printer from other W95 & W98
computers. I've read the HOWTOs and generated the smb.conf file which is
at the end of this message. I used the [test]

Corrupted OGGs (Winamp or Mac OS?)
I recently ripped a bunch of tracks to ~192 VBR OGG using OGGDROP
XPd v. 1.1 running on Win98 SE and they worked fine and sounded
great in Winamp 2.80. I then edited the tags (also with Winamp
2.80) and copied the files over to to my Mac G4 running OS 9.0.4,
where they sat untouched for about a month. Now, having copied
them back to my Win98 SE machine, they won't play in Winamp,

pxelinux bootup problems on EPIA-M
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had a good dhcpd.conf and /tftpboot
files for a EPIA-M motherboard with RedHat 9.0.... Or maybe
just a configuration that works with the EPIA-M (doesn't matter
which type of linux).
I'm trying to boot the system from the network and it seems to
be getting to downloading pxelinux.0 but then nothing happens
after that....
I'm using ISC dhcpd V3.0pl2,

re. Initial Samba Setup
On a recommendation from this list I checked the junklog file, the
output from which I attached below. It looks as if it does not even see
the linux machine as it indicates not seeing "explorer" which is the
local netbios name. The Win XP machine does not even show in the log.
Here is the last entry for nmbd.log:

MacOS Version of R
I havn't been following this discussion group and so I am probably
revisiting an old topic but I have noticed that the MacOS directory of
binaries available for R has been removed.
Does this mean that MacOS is no longer a target platform? Will this
change with OS X?

Had two scsi hard drives. One went bad. The bad one had lilo in the MBR. Removed the drive. Then used the Mandrake install cd to boot into rescue mode. Was able to mount all filesystems within rescue mode on remaining hard drive
(HD went from sdb to sda). Only glitch was that I could not mount root filesystem as type ext3 -- had to mount as ext2. Modified the lilo.conf file and ran lilo with new
