ZFS for Linux?
Hello, A college friend of mine is using Debian Linux on his desktop, and wondered if he could tap into ZFS goodness without adding another server in his small quiet apartment or changing the desktop OS. According to his research, there are some kernel modules for Debian which implement ZFS, or a FUSE variant. Can anyone comment how stable and functional these are? Performance is a

ZFS but how?
...f I have to learn ''regular'' freeBSD I might as well take the extra step and learn opensolaris, not something i''d want to do learning new stuff isn''t something i''m getting excited about at the moment :p However, I found on the liveDVD/CD that nexentia and beleniX both don''t come in x86_64 flavors? Or does solaris autodetect and auto run in 64bit mode at boottime? Finally, I hope it''s safe to assume that once I have one of these 2/3 options up and running, I can always change right? Say I set up an opensolaris server, but decide 2 years do...

Damm Small Solaris
Hi, for what it''s worth: There''s now a new Live CD for Solaris called Damm Small Solaris: http://www.sunhelp.ru/archives/179-Damn_Small_Solaris_0.1.1_English_Page.html In contrast to Belenix this Live CD works in Qemu - even without kqemu load the performance is not so bad. One important missing are the network driver for the network adapter emulated by Qemu. But they should be in the next version of Damm Small Solaris. The developer is still searching a ftp site to host the image...

bad seagate drive?
Hi list, I''ve got a system with 3 WD and 3 seagate drives. Today I got an email that zpool status indicated one of the seagate drives as REMOVED. I''ve tried clearing the error but the pool becomes faulted again. Taken out the offending drive and plugged into a windows box with seatools install. Unfortunately seatools finds nothing wrong with the drive. Windows seems to see

Using an existing Debian installation as domU...
I have got a xen aware debian version installed on a logicial partition on my laptop. Is it possible to make OpenSolaris dom0 [snv 76] installed in one of the primary partitions to boot the debian one as a domU? If so, how should the config file look like? thanks. -surya

Balancing reads across mirror sets
Hi all, I have an interesting project that I am working on. It is a large volume file download service that is in need of a new box. There current systems are not able to handle the load because for various reasons they have become very I/O limited. We currently run on Debian Linux with 3ware hardware RAID5. I am not sure of the exact disk config as it is a leased system that I have never

RePartition OS disk, give some to zpool
I''ve got knee deep into learning how to use Opensolaris and zfs, and I see now that my goal of home zfs server may have been better served if I had partitioned the install disk leaving some of the 60GB to be added to a zpool. First, how much space does a working OS need. I don''t mean bare minimum but to be comfortable and have some growing room (on the install disk)?

FYI: Ben Rockwood: Solaris no longer free
...the world... but now all eyes turn to OpenSolaris''s fate. The end of the month is here and OpenSolaris 2010.03 is no where in site and those I''ve asked on the inside are unable to say. This might be a good time to catch up on non-Sun/Oracle distros such as Nexenta, Schillix, and Belenix. When combined with the support revamp and the impending Solaris 11 based on IPS, the message seems clear. Out with the old, in with the new. There may be attractive offerings for new customers in the high-end enterprise space, but long time supporters in smaller shops are going to get royally scr...

zfs-discuss mailing list & opensolaris EOL
So, I hear, in a couple weeks'' time, opensolaris.org is shutting down. What does that mean for this mailing list? Should we all be moving over to something at illumos or something? I''m going to encourage somebody in an official capacity at opensolaris to respond... I''m going to discourage unofficial responses, like, illumos enthusiasts etc simply trying to get people

Best use of 4 drives?
I''m putting together a NexentaOS (b65)-based server that has 4 500 GB drives on it. Currently it has two, set up as a ZFS mirror. I''m able to boot Nexenta from it, and it seems to work ok. But, as I''ve learned, the mirror is not properly redundant, and so I can''t just have a drive fail (when I pull one, the OS ends up hanging, and even if I replace it, I have to

Slow death-spiral with zfs gzip-9 compression
I am [trying to] perform a test prior to moving my data to solaris and zfs. Things are going very poorly. Please suggest what I might do to understand what is going on, report a meaningful bug report, fix it, whatever! Both to learn what the compression could be, and to induce a heavy load to expose issues, I am running with compress=gzip-9. I have two machines, both identical 800MHz P3 with

Any recommendations on Perc H700 controller on Dell Rx10 ?
Hi folks: At work, I have an R510, and R610 and an R710 - all with the H700 PERC controller. Based on experiments, it seems like there is no way to bypass the PERC controller - it seems like one can only access the individual disks if they are set up in RAID0 each. This brings me to ask some questions: a. Is it fine (in terms of an intelligent controller coming in the way of ZFS) to have the
