radio station infrastructure.
Hello, I'm setting up icecast/ices to be used as part of a radio station. For our purposes, we're going to want to be able to do things like schedule blocks of media to be played at regular times (shows), as well as to schedule things like one-time broadcasts. It looks like this can be done by building a scheduler app, and writing a script that provides the appropriate items to ices at

the road to 1.0...
...igured all was well. I burned 5 copies, only to find out 3 days later that halfway through one track, one channel cut out for the remainder of the track. So, two ways that FLAC is far superior to Shorten.. incorporated checksums, and much improved error recovery. I see etree.org users as more of archivists than music fans, since we place so much emphesis on bit-for-bit accuracy. Using a codec that makes this job easier for us is a very welcome thing! If you (or anyone else on this list) can keep track of selling points for FLAC over other current (and future) lossless codecs, I would like to compil...

...ation on contacting the right people, he mentioned you guys and I need a little info. Anything that you guys have as far as how playback of the FLAC standard could be played back via WinAmp or similar programs (someone's gotta be working on this, it's a must-have to help convert us SHN archivists) would be greatly appreciated. Also, if there are any other Macintosh users out there I'd like to hear some ideas about what needs to be included and how we might get this accomplished. Also, I have currently adopted the new MacOS X which is completely Unix-based (Free BSD 4.2 I believe)...

--partial not working?
Hi Kevin, I'm not a systems manager so my apologies if I'm a little lost here. I'm an audiovisual conservator/archivist and I use rsync for transferring files, a lot. Yes, I connect to the server and then it shows up as a disk on my desktop and I run rsync between the external drive mounted on my computer and the now mounted server. So, this would be a local copy? And, therefore,

The VM as a way of saving our digital heritage
Some of the discussion items I have seen about VM's failing under upgrades brings up a worrisome point, for me at least. I look at a VM as a 'forever machine'. A way in which I can set up an environment with any old OS and software and be able to boot and interact with it now, or next year or 100 years from now. It is the answer to 'how do we guarantee access to our digitized

@ERROR: auth failed on module -- PROBLEM SOLVED!
The man page for rsync(1) states: --password-file This option allows you to provide a password in a file for accessing a remote rsync server. Note that this option is only useful when accessing an rsync server using the built in trans- port, not when using a remote shell as the transport. The file must not be world readable. It should contain just the password as a single line.

beta release source tarballs
I recently went looking for the beta2 sources and was surprised to not find them anywhere on the website. Worse, the release tags 'public-beta-1' and 'release_1_0_beta_2' longer retrieve the complete code, since part of the repository has been manually rearranged! (Thanks to cvs's non-support of changes in directory structure.) Fortunately, Monty made backups, and was kind

Idea to possibly improve flac?

Unofficial sources (such as Usenet and that torrent site with the old fashioned sailing ship as its logo) are much more likely to have FLAC files that were made from lossy audio. And I vaguely remember reading

--partial not working?
Again, --partial only means don't delete the incomplete file if rsync is aborted. Normally rsync will delete the incomplete file so you don't have bogus files laying around. When you rsync to or from a network mount to rsync that is a local copy. To use rsync over the network either your source or your target would be hostname:/path (for rsync over ssh) or hostname::module (for an

--partial not working?
Hi Kevin, I haven't specified --whole-file. After entering an rsync command the terminal always reads "delta-transmission disabled for local transfer or --whole-file" but I assume that is just a standard phrase that always appears. So, if I am running partial (-P) and not using --whole-file or disabling the delta-transmission, why would an incomplete file be deleted and the

Performance drop during scrub?
Hi all I have a test system with snv134 and 8x2TB drives in RAIDz2 and currently no Zil or L2ARC. I noticed the I/O speed to NFS shares on the testpool drops to something hardly usable while scrubbing the pool. How can I address this? Will adding Zil or L2ARC help? Is it possible to tune down scrub''s priority somehow? Best regards roy -- Roy Sigurd Karlsbakk (+47) 97542685 roy at

Idea to possibly improve flac?
First of all, I am not aware of any official source of FLAC files that provide MP3 sourced data. I meticulously check the music I purchase, especially when it is 24/48 or 24/96 material, because this is new technology, and sometimes people get it wrong. However, you should be aware that many modern producers use software to create their music, and when the software stores sound clips in

Idea to possibly improve flac?
Cool, thanks for all the great comments. I think we agree now on that the "find mp3 before encoding" feature would not be a good idea to implement in the flac core. As Brian pointed out, it might be a better idea to create a program that automatically checks if a flac might have been an mp3 source. My first suggestion was to use FFT, because I know that 128kbps mp3 have a low-pass

Yager on ZFS
Not sure if it''s been posted yet, my email is currently down... http://weblog.infoworld.com/yager/archives/2007/10/suns_zfs_is_clo.html Interesting piece. This is the second post from Yager that shows solaris in a pretty good light. I particularly like his closing comment: "If you haven''t checked out ZFS yet, do, because it will eventually become ubiquitously implemented
