Sound cards for Centros
What sound cards are recognized by Centros? I have installed it on an
old 400MHz IBM Aptiva that has Crystal Audio built-in. However it does
not seem to recognize that, nor a Sound Blaster, nor a Sound Blaster 16
that I have tried.
Any cheapo cards that it would recognize?

W2K Workstation not reading NTConfig.pol
..., etc...) but
none seems to work.
I have tried to setup ntconfig.pol with poledit to
just one user (root) and one machine("ibm") or to
default user and default machine. but nothing changes.
Any ideas?
My server is a DELL POWEREDGE SC1420 running CENTOS
4.1 x86-64. The client is an IBM Aptiva running W2K
SP4.
Thanks, and excuse my poor English.

Bryan Smith: Thanks for the IPCop recommendation
...90-600 KB/sec off my cable modem. I am out in the
low-density boonies, but I still feel this is fairly impressive.
They even have a boot diskette available to support those old BIOS that
won't boot CDs, as this unit was.
So, thanks Bryan.
I'm trying to configure a backup unit on an old Aptiva DX2/66. Have 1
ISA Etherjet. Need a couple more ISA NICS that are configurable for
IRQ/IOBASE. Anyone that wants to put two old good ISA NICS into a home
where they will be cared for and appreciated, send me an email with
details, if config diskette available (even if off the net), price, etc....

hardware help ?
I just bought an TDM400P card with one FXS port and a X101P FXO card to
try and put together the beginnings of a PBX here. The computer they
are going in should arrive in a week. So I thought I would start
learning how to config the card in an IBM Aptiva we have here, an old
400Mhz P2 box. However when I put the TDM400P in the box the machine
won't POST. Does this mean that the card is bad or that the machine
can't handle this new PCI hardware?
If it matters the cards were purchased online at voipdepot.ca just this
week and arrived t...

Booting from Harddisk
...iskette with syslinux and copybs.
I strictly follow the procedure in the syslinux documentation.
Yet, the result of the boot is not that linux is starting.
Instead, the Microsoft windows screen flashes for a couple of
seconds and is then replaced by a Dos prompt.
Syslinux is V2.04. The PC is an IBM Aptiva 486 DX2
I've also tried to prepare the HD using a pure Linux alternative.
(Leaf/Bering 1.1 diskette with kernel supporting IDE disks)
In this case running syslinux fails with undefined symbol open64
In attempt to remedy this, I've tried to link syslinux statically.
The 'make installe...

CentOS 4.5 and CentOS 5.0 News
Hi,
I use CentOS as a firewall/proxy/webserver/fileserver
in my small network. As the small-spec machine with
CentOS is heavily loaded/used I can't afford downtime.
20 GB, pentium II with only 128 MB RAM.
However I want to know the news on 4.5 is it due soon?
Can I gain more by running CentOS 3.x range on such an
old machine like mine?
Will CentOS 5.0 mean you need a minimum of 512 RAM?

...problem. Because the advertisement
folders had now titles like "D?couvrez les joies du multim?dia avec
votre Pine". In France, "pine" is the slang word for "penis".
After a few funny phone calls, the project was eventually renamed, and
some of you may remember the IBM Aptiva running Windows 95.
:o)

Sound cards for CentOS
...ngs that
I am sorry if my answer appeared to be a little agressive, it was not that
way I wanted to tell...
Linux is freedom and should stay like it...
Use it the way you want... of course, I think the problem with your sound
card could be solved with isapnp, because those sound cards (on older IBM
Aptiva) were often ISA cards, that's maybe why it is not correctly
detected...

If all this works out, I'll try to send some money.
Also, *if* I'm able, I will help test what I can. Got an old Aptiva over

Hmmm.... am I really a candidate for this org? Maybe not?

I second all Fred said. I have a 200MHz Pentium w/96MB running IPCop
(1.11 now) and it just hums (eliminating fans would eliminate the "hums"
too! :)
But, I have also installed it (for test/backup) on my wife's discarded
Aptiva w/ a real 486 and very little memory (I don't recall how much,
whatever came from the factory... 32MB, 64MB, 128MB?).
Also on an AMD 486 clone (x586?) 100MHz with 36MB of memory.
Only differences observed seem related to half/full duplex nature of the
NICs and raw speed. With my cable being i...

Will WINE help me get the internet on Puppy Linux?
I'm currently trying to swap a very old computer over to Puppy Linux so that it will work better. Puppy installed fine and is working beautifully and i have no problems except that I can't get the Internet to work.
My computer:
10 year old IBM Aptiva
Windows XP
Intel Pentium 3 - 499 MHz,
192MB RAM,
12 GB hard drive (7GB free)
My internet:
3g Dongel HUAWEI Model:E160g
This dongel contains software for windows and mac that automatically installs, (actually it doesn't even work properly on mac, but that's not important) but it's...
