Slow XP -> Samba 3 (but not FTP etc)
Dear All,
Sorry to repeat a question I've seen mentioned before, but have not been
able to find a solution to my specific instance.
I have an XP SP2 box (and one with no SP), and some Win2K boxes, and a Samba
server (3.0.9-2). The Win2K boxes can all copy files to the server at a
reasonable speed, but the XP boxes are all dreadfully slow. FTP from the XP
boxes is fine. The XP boxes can

Merb, Mongrel+Erb
Hey there folks-
I''m happy to announce the first useable release of my new pocket-
framework Merb. Merb is a mongrel handler with built in controller
and view templating with erb. It has a nice routing system similar to
rails but much simpler. It uses some of the code from the camping
handler and the rails handler and then some of its own secret sauce
to form imho a nice fast

Tripwire mess..
This may be, or may not be a security issue, however, since alot of people
still use tripwire-1.2 or lesser versions(this is what shipped with R.H.
Linux 5.2 at least), they might be interested in following detail:
Chuck Campbell (campbell@neosoft.com) pointed me out that tripwire dies with
coredump on R.H. linux, if it hits a filename containing 128-255 characters.

Data manager in a Spatial Ecology lab, Univ Florida, Fort Lauderdale FL
...primary mission of the Data Manager will be to manage the group's
database system: we run a PostgreSQL/PostGIS database system on a Linux
server, which hosts telemetry data on wood storks, sea turtles, raccoons,
and associated GIS layers. In the near future, we will be adding advanced
data from albatrosses, including accelerometers and infrasound. The Data
Manager will manage the database server (database design, manual and
automated data entry, metadata, set permissions for users and groups,
backups, development of web apps to access and display data, etc.).
Additional responsibilities will include...

Moving to R 3.0.0 on Ubuntu
This is a post I just added to my Ubuntu R Blog
(http://www.personal.psu.edu/mar36/blogs/the_ubuntu_r_blog/2013/03/moving-to-r-300-on-ubuntu.html).
As you may (or may not) be aware of, R 3.0.0 is [scheduled to be
released](http://www.r-project.org/) on April 3rd. Since this is a
major release and there may be some growing pains (but I hope not) in
the move 3.0.0, here is some information

[LLVMdev] Forward: Discussion about custom memory allocators for STL
Hi,
There is a discussion thread on llvm-commits list about a possibility of using custom memory allocators for STL to improve the performance and reduce the memory pressure of STL containers, e.g. std::set.
I thought that this discussion may be interesting for a wider audience and therefore I re-post the messages on llvm-dev as well.
It would be interesting to hear what others think about

Switching from webrick to mongrel
I got tired of restarting my puppetmaster when it stopped responding and
finally switched to mongrel last night.
When running under mongrel, what sort of concurrent connection rates are
people able to get? I dont know how many individual puppetmaster
processes I should spawn, or how to tell when I should span more.
Perhaps I need more than two, because this morning I had a look at how

[LLVMdev] LLVM as a shared library
Hello LLVM community,
Over the last few years the LLVM team here at Apple and development teams elsewhere have been busily working on finding new and interesting uses for LLVM. Some of these uses are traditional compilers, but a growing number of them aren’t. Some of LLVM’s new clients, like WebKit, are embedding LLVM into existing applications. These embedded uses of LLVM have their own unique
