My Linux server (SuSE 8.1, kernel 2.4.19-4GB)`s shares are viewable through
Windows XP Pro`s networking, and files open perfectly. I can also delete
and rename files. The problem occurs when I try to create or modify a file;
Samba bombs out with:

The Windows box then responds with an access denied message, depending on
the application modifying the file.
I`m not great with RPM, but managed to remove (I think) all traces of...

I wonder, would something like this find a home in core R? Or is that too
much syntactic sugar for your taste?

Perhaps a future version of unlink() could use the Sys.glob() mechanism
directly to avoid this inconsistency.

I've been generating functions using a builder and then
compiling them with ExecutionEngine::getPointerToFunction().
Is there some way I can get compilable IR from that?

Slow header fetching rate over nfs mailspool.
We are setting up a Dovecot over a pair of NFS which mirrored with DRBD
+Heartbeat,
under Debian Etch AMD64 with Kernel 2.6.22-5.
The problem was slow header downloading rate. We had tried to use
postal to inject 500 emails which are under 5KB each,
but when ever we start up Mail.app, Thunderbird or even OE6, the
header download rate is terrible slow.
Its look like a few sec for just 1

I also get the same behavior for the DESCRIPTION file.
Is this a known gotcha that someone's found a workaround for, maybe?

Warning: you may need to use R-patched with recent R distros
Two things have emerged in testing on x86_64 Fedora 14 which mean that
a recent R-patched is probably needed.
1) That OS uses zlib 1.2.5: that claims to be binary-compatible with
zlib 1.2.3 but is not, as we found (painfully) on Windows. The remedy
was to remap _all_ the symbols in R's own copy of zlib (not just those
zlib arranged to remap).
The symptoms were crashes using packages XML

Underscores in package names
Won't it be better to have a convention that allows lowercase, dash,
underscore and dot as only valid characters for new package names and keep
the ancient format validation scheme for older package names?
This could be implemented by a single function, taking a strictNaming_b_1
parameter which defaults to true. Easy to use, and compliance results will
vary according to the parameter value,
