SMBFS mounts slow across gigabit connection
I'm using Samba & smbfs to make directories on a Linux file server available across a switched Gigabit network. Unfortunately, when mounting the shares to another Linux system with smbfs, the performance is terrible. To test the setup, I created both a 100mb and 650mb file and transferred them with ftp, smbclient, and smbfs (mounted share). I also used iperf to send each file, just out of curiosity. Here's what I'm seeing: iperf: 100mb - 1.7 seconds (59 MB/s) 650mb - 10.8 seconds (60 MB/s) FTP: 100mb - 2.17 seconds (47 MB/s) 650...

Reading large, non-tabular files
...e the result in a temporary file or a variable, and 2) Read the entire file and filter/reshape it using *apply methods. To my understanding, the use of repeat{}-loops are quite slow in R, and reading an entire file to discard 3 quarters of the data is a bit of an overkill. Not to mention loading an 650MB text file into memory. What I am looking for is a function, that works like the first approach, but avoiding do- or repeat-loops, so I imagine it is implemented in a lower-level language, to be more efficient. Naturally, when calling the function, one would provide a function that determines if/ho...

Poor RAID performance new Xeon server?
...ilar results. Is it me or are the results poor? Is this the best I can expect from the hardware or is something wrong? I would appreciate any advice or possible tweaks I can make to the system to make the performance better. The block I/O is the thing that concerns me as mostly I am serving a 650MB file via samba to 5 clients and I think this is where I need the speed. Plus I am hoping to run some virtualised guests on it eventually, but nothing too heavy. -------------- next part -------------- An embedded and charset-unspecified text was scrubbed... exit status 12 with large files
Hello. I use rsync version 2.4.6, protocol version 24 on a RH7.2 machine. The purpose is mirroring a Red Hat repository. All works fine, *except* for really big files. ISO images (~650MB) are a good example. Whenever I don't exclude *.iso, I get the following: ================================================================== receiving file list ... done sending sums for 1408 recv_generator(linux/7.3/en/iso/i386/valhalla-i386-disc2.iso,1409) unexpected EOF in read_timeout ====...

Samba 2.07 and W2K, bad performance
Copying a file (650Mb) from a W2K pc to Samba doesn't work well. I have a transfer time of 25 minutes while the 2 machine are connected with a crosscable to each other (10Mb ethernet). A ftp between both systems went well. What's the problem...... -- Regards, Roger -- Running Redhat 7

Linux freezes on large file transfers
I am running MD 10 (Community) as a file server on a Shuttle SB61G2. This setup worked very well under Mandrake 9.2 however, everytime I try to copy files larger than say <550 ~650MB using MD 10, my linux box freezes and must be rebooted. I can FTP the same file(s) perfectly fine to other PC 's on my home net. Small volumes of files work fine as well as ISO images, the box seems to lock up only after it passes some type of treshold treshold. I am not sure what to do h...

Bootable CD Images
...m and it comes up with an isolinux menu that lets me pick from several different floppy images to boot Dos and several different Linux Rescue Disks using memdisk. So far so good. What I would like to be able to do is boot a bootable image that is not a floppy image. For example, DemoLinux is a 650MB iso file and when burned to a cd it boots. What I would like to do is be able to boot the iso image after picking it from a menu. Perhaps that isn't the best example, lets say you have two distros LinuxA and LinuxB and they are both 200MB so they can both fit on one cd. You can't expan...

End of File Error on index optmize
I was optimizing a 650MB using ferret (0.11.3) and I received the following error. I''ve seen some people have similar issues but I haven''t seen any resolutions. The contents of the index directory follow the error. Has anyone seen anything like this and found a resolution? Many thanks. /mnt/apps/...

Re: Multiple client access same file
...ons (the rest, when blank, will be defaults). Then gradually start adding them in again. I don't see why Samba should be crashing based on what you're telling me, and that's how I found our problem last time we had some really bad Samba corruption. A read-only filesystem from a large 650MB file mounted into another part of the same hard drive really shouldn't crash. Of course, I could be very wrong (: That's what I hope to find out with my benchmark. /dev/idal --- Shane Kennedy <skenn@indigo.ie> wrote: > That's what I have done. In the case of the 2 > prog...

My guess is that It leaves the trigger memory of 567MB plus the base 48MB. There are two interesting observations for me here: first, to read a .csv file, I need to have at least 10-15 times as much memory as the file that I want to read---a lot...

problems booting isolinux
...get the right sha1sums for every file, so I don't think it is a read failure of the CD drive or media. While most CD drives here are Samsung, I did test with two different SONY and one HP drives The drives boot my older CDs but not the newer ones that are larger (but still much less than the 650MB quoted maximum). I am willing to try paches, provide files, etc. I hope someone on the list can help. I tried mkisofs 2.01 and 2.01a7; as you can guess, my head is still spinning from all these combinations of boot attempts and the loss of almost an entire box of CD blanks. There is no question I...

[Flac-users] Should I use 11 Khz or 22 Khz
...sn't high quality, because I'm putting mine on CD, and that makes it easier (less conversion steps = better audio). If you decide to go higher than 11KHz, be prepared, because the better the quality, the more space you'll need - for an hour of audio at 44.1KHz stereo, it's around 650MB; around half that for mono, and less for other sample rates. What kind of computer are you using? What version of Linux or other OS? Have you decided on limits for storage (that will determine the quality you can use, more than anything else)/How many tapes are you planning to convert? If you...

...nouveau to install, recent updates through ubuntu intrepid repository (ppa) to 1:0.0.0~git20081009-0~ppa1 Have problems with high cpu use using nouveau particularly when changing desktops, using fluxbox as window manager. Seems to use a lot of memory at start - free -m buffers up from ~120MB to ~650Mb on start. Only difference being the nouveau driver. Have tried to use oprofile to get data - not sure if it's right or even if it helps. Weak CheckSum Question
...O (against the checksums in the hash_map) I am getting almost 95% false hits. (ie the weak-checksums match, but when comparing the offsets the comparison fails). Is this expected? Is there a stronger rolling checksum I could implement? It takes about 80seconds to generate all the checksums on a 650MB file, thus I could certainly use a stronger algorithm which cause less false hits. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Stephan Buys PS please reply directly to me as I am not on the mailing list.
