Reducing Memory Footprint (fcgi)
...have a website up and running on TextDrive with Rails/lighttpd/fcgi.
Unfortunately, as my account is a "shared server" account on TxD, they kill
processes that are hogging resources (quite understandably).
Unfortunately for me, my Ruby fcgi processes load up rather ... large (just
under 50mb). It doesn''t take much to push it to 50mb, at which point it
gets killed.
Does anyone have any suggestions for reducing the footprint of my app? I
know that there is a profiler script available for benchmarking and such,
but it seems that it focuses more on speed performance than memory...

Dovecot2 + Quota
Hello!
I need to configure Quota on Roundcubemail with Dovecot2.
So, I did:
90-quota.conf:
# SQL backend:
quota = dict:User quota::proxy::sqlquota
quota_rule = *:storage=20M:messages=1000
}
dict {
sqlquota = mysql:/etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-sql.conf.ext
}
OK, works! but, My webmail shows me 20M of quota. But on my Postfixadmin I
configured 200M.
How can I fix this?

I believe the requirement is 50Mb of _disk space_, not 50Mb of memory.
I can run the beta of WinS+4.0 quite comfortably on a machine with 32
Mb of memory. I haven't tried machines with smaller amounts of memory
but I presume it would work there as well.

Absolutely minimal Asterisk PSTN gateway
...--
Hash: SHA1
Hello together,
I am setting up a communication server which should also act a
very-low-load PSTN gateway. I am usiing a AMD K6 200 running from a 500
MB usb memory stick. What is the ABSOLUTE minimum space requirements for
~ running asterisk to work as gateway between isdn and lan? 50MB or 1
GB?(I would compile, configure, etc. on a separate machine and then copy
everything to the flash device.)
Cheers,
Arik

samba 4.x slow ...
Hi,
we are running samba 4.4 on two machines as file servers.
Both are running a GFS (stornext). The storage is attached using 8G HBA.
You can get up to 800MB/s local speed. We are exporting the shares using
2x1GB
and 2x10G. However the clients are only getting 40-50MB/s. With samba3 I
think we had up to 80-90MB/s.
Using a 100MB/s link for the client we see 12-13MB/s (wire speed).
Using NFS (3) we see up to 120MB/s (GB). How can we improve the speed ?
How can we find the bottle neck ? (I tested already various samba
versions (4.4{5,6}) without
any success....

GPLPV benchmark results
Hi James,
I tested (as I wrote a few days ago) the latest PV drivers release, and they
seem to work correctly apart of the "Safely remove Xen Net Device Driver" tray
icon glitch.
I made a series of benchmarks with PassMark''s PerformanceTest on 6 twin
concurrent VMs with the PV drivers installed, both with the /GPLPV switch on
and off, and on one lonely VM, still in both

samba performance issue
Hi, I recently installed a new samba server to replace an older Novell
machine. Now, we are having performance issues. I have installed many
samba servers, and have not run into this problem before. Some background
info:
The server is an Athlon 1800+ w/ 512MB DDR RAM. We are using software raid
on 80GB IDE ATA 100 drives with the VIA 82C3XX chipset. When mirroring the
drives, we usually get

logrotate script not working
...39;ll rotate them here
/var/log/mysqld.log {
weekly
size 50M
create 0644 mysql mysql
rotate 1
}
And from that I would expect the log to rotate when it reaches 50M in size.
However I just caught that log weighing in at 356MB!! So how can I get
this log file to rotate when it hits 50MB?
Any ideas, advice and help at all would be appreciated.
Thanks

NAS with Samba and Multi-TT USB Hubs
Dear Sir or Madam,
I've a very specific question about samba...
My setup: I've a Raspberry 3B with Raspbian and a multi-TT USB hub attached to it. A few full-speed (1MB/s) mass-storage devices are going to be connected to this hub. On every device is just one big file (f.e. 50MB .txt file).
Multi-TT just helps reading more full-speed devices on a single hub simultaneously. This works perfectly on the local Raspbian system.
I've plugged in one device to the USB hub and tested the speed = 227kB/s
Two devices on the same hub at the same time, speed for each hub = 227kB/s...

rsync stuck at +- 50 MB/s, cp and scp are +- 200 MB/s
Hi,
i have two servers, connected to to the lan by 10Gb with 10Gb and DAS
hardware raid.
Each system con read and write locally or to the 10G iscsi by more than
200 MB/s.
Now I have to transfer backups form A to B and doing this with rsync
always stuck at +- 48-50MB/s no matter which options, compressions,
encryption etc I use. Even the plain default rsync is at that 50 Mb limit.
coyp by scp goes up to 200 MB/s.
Copy from and to my workstation with scp from or to both servers is at
1Gb limit (so +- 100 MB/s)
Why is rsync stuck at +- 50 MB/s ? Any suggestio...

Weird Error
R-Users,
I hope this is not a uniformed question, but I am a little lost.
I ran into a problem this morning and I was wondering if anyone had
seen it before. I was trying to summarize each column of a data set
(150,000 rows, ~50mb, so it was a relatively big file) imported from a text
file using the below code;
data.summary <- read.csv("c:/summary.txt", sep="")
data.summary <- as.matrix(data.summary)
my.summary <- function(x){
return(c(min=min(x),max=max(x), mean=mean(x)))}

Samba freezes server when writing 50MB MS Word document (sometimes)
Hi list
for a couple of days we have the problem that our samba pdc server (ubuntu
8.04
LTS [kernel 2.6.24-24] with 3.0.28a samba package) freezes sometimes when
someone saves a specific word document (about 50MB) from MS Word. It's not
always the same person. Saving the document - as nearly any huge MS Office
document - takes some time, about one minute (guessed).
First the server gets really slow. Some user programs on clients fail to
write.
The CPU usage of the smb process of the user writing the do...

I think that's about all relevant info ...
Had file on disk (not array), attempted to mv file to array.
Went fine till 2.4GB was copied, then it slowed down to a meg every few
minutes.
Free memory was ~50MB (Typically is 1.5-2GB), and cache was 2.5GB.
Stopped the move, however cache not being cleared out -- and this issue
continues to happen - unsure if it was always a problem/known issue, it
does however only occur when copying a single file > 2.4GB (I have
copied 5+GB of 1+GB files in the pas...

Yes, there's about 3TB available there.

The index file in question was 255MB. In desperation, and watching
the other thread going on about index files, I moved dovecot.index.cache

Samba fileserver limited to 50 MB/s on gbit
Hello,
I am running a fileserver with smbd here.
The server is a 64bit 2.8 GHz Celeron D with 2GB RAM, running 64bit Debian,
Samba version 3.0.23c.
It is running as a pure fileserver so its only CPU load is serving files.
The client I am doing the tests from is WinXP Pro SP2.
It is connected via Intel e1000 gbit ethernet (both the server and client
use e1000 chipsets).
I have done a raw tcp

Memory problems, HDF5 library and R-1.2.2 garbage collection
Hello:
I've recently started using R to process data in HDF5 format. My files
come in 1.5MB chunks, but they can be as big as 50MB.
The problem I am facing with R-1.2.2 is that when I try to load 50 of
the 1.5MB HDF5 files (using the hdf5 library) in a loop, my Linux box
gets close to its memory limit around the file #15 (256MB RAM and
256MB swap). This happens even if I load file -> erase all the objects
-> load file -...
