A large group 64kbps listening test has just come to an end, organised through the Hydrogenaudio[1] audio discussion board (and managed expertly by Roberto Amorim). Bandwidth, again, can someone check my math?
I want to put a single voice-mail box on a remote server, where I have metered bandwidth. Before I do this, I want to make sure it's feasible. Could someone confirm the following math for me? G.711, at 64kpbs has a rated network load of 88kbps. So for each second of conversation, about 11KB are crossing the wires in each direction. That means for a minute of two-way conversation, 1.3MB of data are transferred? That means for each GB of bandwith, callers can leave almost 800 minutes worth of voice-me...

Announce: ogg2enc: Perl script to run oggenc twice
...y desktop, and small files on my Zaurus; but I didn't want to keep switching grip's configuration back and forth. So I wrote ogg2enc, a Perl script which takes the same command-line arguments as oggenc, and runs oggenc twice. The first run gets its command line munged to produce a file at 64kpbs; the second run gets the same command line as ogg2enc. I figured someone else might like it, so I've put it up at <http://www.thibault.org/ogg2enc/>. ogg2enc --help gives ogg2enc's description followed by oggenc --help. (Fan mail time: I really love the fact that 64kpbs Ogg sounds...

bandwith issues, ISP hosting services, etc
I am looking into supporting around 20 SIP clients (ATAs, IP softphones, etc) distributed in around 10 different end points (in South America). For the most part they all have narrow band connections 64kpbs, 128 at most and I?d like to use g729 all around (don?t have too many alternatives) To start with, I will have one * with no gateway to the PSTN and eventually a few * boxes with termination at different points. My main concern is the bandwith I will need on the site where * will be located. Curr...

experience with analog channel banks in E1 land
...w migration, the asterisk server will be inserted between the telco E1 and the hicom. new phones will be sip ones. the customer has several fax machines and analog phones (some of them have to be explosion-proof). around 50 analog ports in total are needed. as we are in E1 land (germany) we have 64kpbs per channel. most (affordable) channels banks are T1 (56kpbs per channel i assume). the questions are: - could the T1 channelbanks be connected to a TE405P with two channels in E1 mode (telco and hicom pbx) and two channels to the channel banks (i think yes, but just to be shure)? - will the fax...
