syslinux-3.36-pre8 feedback
Tested floppy boot on two machines (one PII 350, one 486DX4) Floppy boot with syslinux is very very slow, more than 18 mn to boot a linux kernel from floppy on the 2 machines. Tested with 3 different disquettes that were know to work, boot is reached after this very long time. Noise from floppy head make think floppy wait approximatly one minute between ea...

Problems with Self extracting zip files
...(from the samba share) takes no time at all (500kb/sec). I would say it takes about 10 times as long to unzip when run directly from the samba share. This happens will all self-extracting exe files, and also from any share that I create. Any clues? The samba server is running 1.9.17p4 on FreeBSD (486dx4), the client is Win95b on a P133, and I have a very standard and basic smb.conf (sorry, I couldn't send it right now). I'll send more details if anyone has any ideas. Thanks, Jeff Bond --------------------------------------------------- Jeffery Bond <mailto:jeffbond@compuserve.com&gt...

Cdrom drives for Linux
...e to install and run linux on the machine? is >the regular one enough? -- if yes, I can save some money; if no, I have >to order a scsi cd-rom. I can't comment about the latest Slackware distribution, because I haven't tried it. I did try an old version of Slackware a while ago and it didn't support my CDROM at the time. It did support lots of...

SAMBA digest 1565 - Netlogon problems
...in nmbd whereby it would lose registering itself as the domain controller (certainly, looking at the browse lists with smbclient showed this to be the case). The odd part was that it seemed to be crashed by the clients. A little (occasional use) server we have, a 486DX2/50, worked fine with a 486DX4/120 client machine. However, when we powered up a P166, the domain logons stopped working (for all clients). In short, upgrade to 1.9.18p1 and it should go away. (Well, it did for me. ;-) - Bob ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Plot => [(x,...

About I386 not fitting on one DVD
Just a thought If the I386 (or i686, never could figure out why the name change) disk doesn't quite fit on the DVD+, and needs a DVD-, this might put some folks at an inconvenience. I wonder if the difference between fitting and not fitting is small enough, so that some amount of pruning might make it fit on the DVD+R image. Some ways to prune could be: a) Create two versions of the

Samba performance
Hi all. I know this has probably been asked before, but I need a quick answer, and didn't find anything on the net. Has anyone done any benchmark comparisons of server speed from Win95 clients, accessing files on a Samba 1.9.17p1 server share, as compared to an NT Server, running on the same server hardware? If so, how did Samba 1.9.17 measure up to the NT server? I need an answer to this,
