Xen HVM cpuid problem
...r registers.
Guests OS''s and cpuid tools in HVM which query for
cpuid Fn 0000.0000 %eax and 8000.0000 %eax, see the value 0 and think,
Xen emulates oldish 386/486 CPUs.
This leads to strange boot failures, "your CPU does not support long mode"
or "minimum required CPU is a 486DX CPU" when launching 32bit or 64bit HVM
guests.
To reproduce this, cpuid is NOT explicitely configured
in the guest config file.
BTW: Is there a reason for not handling cpuid in one central place?

A distro around Shorewall
Hi all,
Currently at work we use a commercial product called "Gnatbox", which, I
believe, is a BSD derivative running on a floppy disk. They have a pretty
UI and all, but I''d feel much safer/happier with a GNU/Linux box and
Shorewall doing the same thing.
In fact, I''m doing something very close to this at home using Openwrt and
Shorewall on my WRT54G router, but I

The [PXENV_UDP_READ 0001 err] messages are correct; it's pxelinux

win98 vs win95 with TCP/IP

The software we need runs in win9x.
We crave stability. But Linux+Samba is just much slower as a file
server.
It's normally quite fast: are you running over a
dial-up network, requiring you to adust MTU's for
speed???
If not, try ``socket

slow sparc questions
I've got a couple of SPARCstation 2s (about as fast as a fast 486, for most
thing) that I'm going to be using for some testing. I realize that these
machines are a bit slow, but when connecting via OpenSSH, it's MUCH slower
than connecting to my 486-DX 50. The point where it waits is just after
"debug: Sent encrypted session key.". The pause is for about 10 seconds,

It's definitely the compression process. The ripped wav is

page of graphics won't completely print
Greetings,
I'm not on the list, so please CC me, thanks. :)
Problem: printing a full-page graphic stops 3 inches into the print.
System:

the distribution)

Cron daemon with better precision?
Greetings list-
I'm on the hunt for a cron scheduler that supports definitions to the second. Obviously, every cron daemon supports minute/hour/etc but I have a special application that requires finer granularity.
I know I know... someone will say "The load will be horrendous on your system" or "Why don't you simply schedule your cron every minute and make up the higher

Vorbis on Legacy hardware
I'm currently in the process of making a linux distro made specifically
to run on legacy hardware. My test system is a compaq 486/33. I was
wondering if anyone has tried playing ogg vorbis on a system this old.
Does it play without skipping or anything? If so, are there any really
small and efficient media players that would run on this kind of
hardware? If that doesn't work I

Running CentOS on very old hardware
A friend has an old Pentium-133 laptop with 32MB of memory and a 1.3 GB
hard disk that he wants to use as a web server for a very small
community. Will CentOS (or any other RHEL derived distribution for
that matter) install and run with acceptable performance on such a
system, or will a specialized distribution like Damn Small Linux be a
better choice? In this case, disk space is not a big

Very Large Data Sets
List,
Can R handle very large data sets (say, 100 million records) for data mining applications? My understanding is that Splus can not, but SAS can easily.
Thanks,

Browsing
I am configuring Linux (2.0.33) as a local router. I am wanting to use
Samba (1.9.18p3) to "manage" the browse lists on my network so that
computers on each subnet can browse resources on the other subnets. My
local network consists of Win95 and NT40 workstations with NT40 servers.
My test configuration consists one token ring segment on one side of
the Samba box (network .192) and

I'm running Mandrake 8.1 (downloaded) and the install went fine.
Configuring Samba however is another story. I get the message "could not
connect to host - localhost" on the Linux box. I cannot see the network
from the Linux system. The Linux system is visable from Win'98SE as are the
shares but I cannot access them "password is incorrect".
