Winbind causes LLOONNGG delays
I have Samba 3.0.4 joined to a Windows 2000 Active Directory domain with about 16,000 users and 1,000 groups. I run FreeBSD 5.2.1 on a Dell PowerEdge 1750, dual proc P4 Xeon with HTT and 1 gig of RAM. Storage is RAID-5, three drives, 36G each. I use winbind to auth users when accessing shares on the server. This is going to be our new fileserver. Check this: # time ps auxwww | grep http root 7904 0.0 0.3 4484 3212 ?? Ss 2:58PM 0:00.01 /usr/local/sbin/httpd -k start root 7905 0.0 0.3 4884 3380 ?? S...

Confirming Multi-Processor
I have a test bed server that's pretty old- PIII Dual 550. I've done yum update kernel-smp and when I run cat/proc/cpuinfo it lists both processors- is there anything I need to to to confirm that it's fully utilizing both processors? I ask this because under the old OS (Fedora Core 2) I always saw an error message at boot that said something about operating in single-processor mode

Installation problems with large mirrored drives
I am trying to install CentOS 4.6 to a pair of 750GB hard drives. I can successfully install to either of the drives as a single drive, but when I try to use both drives and mirror the partitions, I start having problems. Anaconda crashes as it is trying to format the drives. This is what I'm trying to create: /dev/md0: 200MB, /boot /dev/md1: 2GB, swap /dev/md2: rest of the

This command is a disk defragment + shrink inside VMware. Basically, the .vmdk was about 36G even though the system was only using about 3G. Running this command released all that free space and then reduced the VMDK file. I figured the time should be proportional to disk usage, which is why I was so surprised that it took orders of magnitude longer than other systems with similar disk u...

Setting ACLs
This is possibly the dumbest question I have asked ever, but how do you set ACLs on files within a ZFS filesystem? Trying to use setfacl(1) diverts me to the acl(5) manpage; well, I know that I need to use NFSv4 style ACLs, but where is the utility to do so? This is on Solaris 10 Update 2. Thanks, Ceri -- That must be wonderful! I don''t understand it at all.

FW: Logwatch for XXXXXXX.kd4efm.org (Linux)
Found an error or two from my logwatch report from yesterday, thought I would share this in hopes this is just first time run of the problem I noticed in the Kernel report section... Also not sure why there's an issue with automount either.... but I guess I could ask on that issue as well. I am not worried about the NAMED error, this is something that happens due to one of the services that

Proposal: ZFS Hot Spare support
As mentioned last night, we''ve been reviewing a proposal for hot spare support in ZFS. Below you can find a current draft of the proposed interfaces. This has not yet been submitted for ARC review, but comments are welcome. Note that this does not include any enhanced FMA diagnosis to determine when a device is "faulted". This will come in a follow-on project, of which some
