centos on 64M 350Mhz pentimum II
All, I have an old computer 64M 350Mhz pentium II. centos os 4.1 installs on it fine. however on boot it says low memory and it kills certain processes. httpd or sendmail. I have a 2GIG swap and I did a chkconfig XXX off on a few things like xfs, nfs, httpd, kudzu. My old 2.4 kernel used to run in 4M with a swap... I had recompiled t...

slow backup using W98
...have been using Samba as a Windows server replacement for years, both in my shop and most of my clients. Recently I replaced a WNT 4 server at a customer location with a Linux box - Mandrake 10.0 - which is strictly a file server. The machine my client is using to backup his server is a W98 box w/ 350MHz/256MB, an HP Travan tape drive and Stomp Backup My PC V5.0. This backup was taking about 4 hours when the W98 box was backing up NT (NTFS file system) but now doesn't finish overnight. The server only has about 2.5GB of data but a great deal of that is in very small files concentrated in a few...

question about performance on different operating systems
...Macintosh is running at _least_ 10 times more slowly than under linux. To give you an idea, to run a small number of simulations takes around 80 seconds on my laptop (running Debian linux, 200MHz processor, 112 megs RAM) while the same batch takes upwards of 10 minutes on a powermacintosh G4 (350MHz and 128 megs of RAM). Out of curiosity, is this unexpected, or can that sort of performance hit be normal when changing operating systems. Matthew Norton Dept. Biological Sciences Universite de Montreal Canada. p.s. I'll run the same check on my windows desktop at home, and let you all kno...

Help with PDC hardware
Hey everyone. Our network has a PII 350Mhz Windows NT server. It serves as our PDC. It also serves our email, print and file sharing needs. We have plans of totally phasing out this computer. There are two candidates for the replacement of our PDC. One is a PIV 1.7Ghz with 768MB of memory (hostname: Karou). This computer is currently ou...

speed and memory
...minutes java.lang.OutOfMemory occurs. I think it must be the jspeex component, because before i added jspeex to my app usage was constant at about 5mb. is it possible to be jspeex ? another issue is speed - when doing UWB, quality 3, 44100 stereo encoding my cpu load goes up to 100% on a dual 350MHz - is it correct that lower quality uses significantly less cpu resources? thanks in advance, ulrich p.s. the quality for that bandwidth is really awesome ! Minimum system requirement for ....
...r Asterisk PBX'es (GSM too). Have someone tried to build a graph about the dependencies between hardware configuration and the number of used phones, PSTN connections. It can be very useful for design purpose. I have found a very cheap, quiet an small system (a Compaq Deskpro EN SFF) with PII/350MHz and 128MB RAM and I want to know if it is enouigh for my purpose (a small home PBX). Thanks, Dan

nmbd reacts to its own broadcasts?
...s between the registration packets for each name became 2, 1, and 1 s. Problem solved! But is this normal behavior? Should I be receiving my own UDP broacasts? Is nmbd's reacting to them a bug? Is there a better way to avoid these errors? Is this an artifact of my network (somewhat ancient: 350MHz Pentium II server, one 10Mbps hub, but less than 10 m span)? Sincerely, Rick

Samba takes some time to wake up...
Subject: Samba takes some time to wake up.... Hi folks, We are using Samba-2.0. with RedHat 5.2 on a PII-350MHz and RAID SCSI HD as a domain-logon-server. The clients are Win 95 Pentium PCs connected by ethernet. The problem is: Samba takes a long time, i.e. 1 min, to let the first user log on in the morning. After that the response times are reasonable. All the followi...

FW: Outlook .pst on a samba share; do or don't?
I'm running a new (6 months old) fast server, with an ultra-scsi RAID array . . . some of my workstations, however, are getting elderly: some are 5 year old 350Mhz machines, and my users are finding it faster to put their .pst files on their Samba-shared Linux home directories. (50 users, .pst files from 100mb to 1.5Gb). (yes, yes, I know, 1.5GB is WAY too big for a .pst file; its a constant fight to get them to archive old stuff). An added advantange, if y...

BSDI 4.0.1 Samba 2.0.4b Performance Problems???
Hello group, I have a BSDI 4.0.1 box running Samba 2.0.4b. The box is a dual 350mhz, 256MB RAM, 2 36Gig Shares, 1 18Gig Share,1 9Gig root, Intel onboard SCSI controller (Symbios?) and is on a fully switched full duplex 100MB fast ethernet network. The NT box is running 4.0 SP3, dual 400mhz, 256MB RAM, 2 4Gig Seagate SCSI Drives, Adaptec 2940UW and is on the same network as above....
