Best way to manage a 128Kb/s pipe - help
Hi All I have a 128Kbs internet connection used for in-coming and out-going traffic. What tools do I need to manage the following services: http, ssh (scp), ftp, streaming audio, smtp, instant messenger. Q1. What is the best kernel to use at the moment and what other tools need to be installed. Internet -------- e...

Graceful degradation of signal
...f this sort of musing gets done, eh?) I was thinking about graceful degradation of audio signals. Let me apologise in advance if these are elementary concepts or if I demonstrate a complete lack of insight -- I don't rate even a dabbler status in the area of audio codecs. Anyway: If we have a 128kbs signal coming down a *udp* channel with close to 25% packet loss, it would be really nice if it sounded like a 96kbs signal, not a choppy 128kbs. Short question: is this possible and feasible? Extended question/scenario: It is of course easy to achieve if we are unconcerned about the absolute q...

Using a CBR when encoding to *.ogg
Greetings Fellow Vorbis Gurus! How can I encode, using CDex, at a CBR (constant bit rate) rather than the VBR? Also, can one take a 128kbs MP3 file and re-encode it to ogg? If so, please explain the procedure. By the way, I'm using a Windows based system. Thank you! /jp/ dojpaul@coffey.com --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list,...

buffer size from source to ice/shoutcast
...happening but I'mnot sure how to fix it. I think this is happening because my source is sending a little bit too much data to ICE/SHOUTcast. My formula for sending data is pretty simple and goes like this: buffersize = bitrate * 1024 / 8 send buffer wait 1 second repeat So..broadcasting at 128kbs means I send a buffer of 16384 bytes per second. Is this the correct way to calculate how many bytes to send ICEcast or is there a better way? Am I disregarding anyting liek network overhead? I've run my source from several computers, all had the same problem. I also ran it on the same box as...

Kernel Error with Icecast
I currently have Icecast 2.3.1 running with Darkice on a Fedora Core 4 box (with the 2.6.14 kernel). We have three streams running (all mp3) @ 128kbs, 64kbs, and 24kbs. I am consistently seeing the following error: kernel: Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address ffffffff It does appear to be icecast causing the error. Oddly, when this first started showing up, it would crash icecast entirely - meaning I couldn't get a...

Icecast2 access problem
Thanks (slapping forehead with hand). I completely forgot that my upstream is limited to 128kbs. That would definitely cause a problem as you have mentioned. For the time being, I re-encoded the files at 56kbs to see if that helps. If so, I'll look into using a even lower bandwidth streams. Let me know if you are successful using this lower bandwidth stream. -Jim On Mon, 2001-12-03...

content on demand HOWTO available
...reaming this way is that if the file is encoded at a bitrate that is higher than can be downloaded by (or served to) the client due to bandwidth limits, the file will sound like crap if it plays at all...or the buffer has to be increased so much that you might as well just download the mp3. I have 128kbs upload limit so if I stream files this way I can just barely listen to it without it clicking and breaking off..it also means that only 1 person can listen at a time for 128kbs mp3's. The other problem with this is that you cannot control how many people are downloading this way.. which means...

ices question
...r is a pIII-450 with 2xgb hd , 128MB ram and an 100MB ethernet nic(possible a good system). If i want to start more than 3 streams , all streams are running not continously. many dropouts and squelches while playing. is there an config problem nor is the hardware too small ? the stream running with 128kbs/44khz. ive tested with 64kps/22khz and 32kps/22khz and there is no better run of the server..... if there is an need for my config-files i will post them ... hope for some answers .... thx nils from germany --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ icecast project homepage: h...

newbie questions
ok totally new here so please forgive me i've got icecast up and running on an old 486 running on debian 2.2r2 I'm using shout to feed a playlist i can connect and listen over the local network no problem, but remote users are having no luck its running at 128kbs to me locally.. (which is too fast for remote users) do i need to re-encode the mp3's to a lower bitrate? if so whats good? thanks for putting up with inane questions John --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ icecast project homepage: http://www.icecast.org/ To unsu...

Which is obviously not a good thing. If this is the case, then you should get the erro...

But your algorithm will suffer because sending the data will take a non-neg...

off: live365 relay
...After you signed up with them, you could park 365 meg of mp3s (up to 56k) and/or set up a relay (using either icecast or shoutcast) all for free. (Dirty little secret was at first, although you could only park mp3s encoded at 56k or lower, their relay server would gleefully relay streams up to 128kbs) About the only downside at that point was that their server wouldn't pass ID3 data so listeners had to go to the Live365 site to see song info and there was no info for relays. Not a problem, since Oddsock and others made programs available to easily display tunes on your own website. Ev...

Sound & Vision codec comparison article
...found this link on slashdot: http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/SoundAndVision/FrameSet/0,1670,_sl_SoundAndVision_sl_Article_sl_0_cm_1653_cm_130_2020_1_cm_00,00.html It is a Sept 1999 article describing some very detailed, double blind listening tests comparing PAC(Lucent), MP3(FhG) and MS audio at 128kbs. In typical microsoft fashon, MS audio is the clear looser despite all their hype. There are types of music where MP3 does better than PAC and vice versa, but overall MP3 comes out ahead. In only one sample did MP3 perform poorly. MP3 and PAC are both MDCT/scalefactor type codecs. Anyone know...

Icecast2 Station with multiple scheduled DJs?
...solution is re encoding the mp3 stream, which is a loss of quality ******************************************************************* it looks like my best option might be to have the DJs broadcast in 256kbs mount points that are hidden, and use liquidsoap to rebroadcast it to the live stream in 128kbs mp3. I can then control liquidsoap via an external programmatic interface which allows me to switch from DJ to DJ based on a timer, or to manually switch to a different show outside of the timer. I just don't like that it will reencode the audio. I was planning on using liquidsoap as the final...

Vorbis/Lame
Hi, I think that it would be a good thing to know more about those 2 projects (and also the future patent free format). I think that many people as me know about Lame, but not about Vorbis, and vice-versa. It would be fine that someone (perhaps the maintainer) of every project would introduce to both group of people those projects. 2 things would be interesting (to my mind): - to know about the

Icecast2 access problem
I seem to be having problems with people accessing an icecast stream from one of my computers. I am using the current cvs of icecast2 (icecast module), libshout2 (libshout module), and ices2 (ices module) and the RC2 version of the ogg and vorbis libraries. I connect to the internet via DSL and have the DSL modem attached to a Linksys router. The router is configured to forward all port 8000
