For what it's worth, I created a Windows 2012R2 VM, joined the domain as a
member server and installed only the File and Storage Services.
Next, I installed the Windows Deployment Services role, "Integrated with
Active Directory". That when I get the errors mentioned above.
Then, I removed the WDS role and reinstalled it as a "Standalone
Server".
That works fine. In fact it also allows prestaging. So, at least for what I
want to do, I don't seem to need AD integration of the role. Which is
perfectly fine with me.
So I went ahead and installed WDS on my production server as Standaloe.
Works fine. I've built the image I plan to deploy and I'm resuming
testing
tomorrow. Will post if anything else goes wrong.
Take away: there does seem to be a problem between WDS on Windows 2012R2
and Samba AD on Ubuntu Xenial.
