samba - Mar 2018 - Samba 4.8.0 and Schema 69 support (including replication)

This should work fine.  Additionally the new samba-tool domain adprep
tool can help with the reverse, allowing 2012R2 DCs to join Samba
domains after they are upgraded with that tool. 

(Sorry for missing that out of the release notes).

Doesn’t 2012R2 use WMI for the domain join?

The adprep work provides a workaround for that, thankfully.
