I run the AD DC as a file & print server and haven't had any major problems.
Hi, You can safely use it as a fileserver, there's no real issue. It's just a « best practice » mainly to avoid domain downtime if you performing maintenance operations on fileserver. As virtualisation seems to be already configured I would create dedicated VM for the DC(s) and another one for the files server, to limit downtime when doing maintenance.
