I was able to solve this problem by tweaking smb.conf to:

[global]
logon path = \\%N\%U\.profile
store dos attributes = yes
csc policy = disable
...

[homes]
    comment = Home Directories
    browseable = no
    writable = yes
    valid users = %S
    create mask = 0664


Removed "profile acls = yes".
