Hello Samba developers, hello active Samba mailing list supporters, hello * During the last year I (re-)wrote a lot of HowTos and tried to clean up the Wiki in a careful way. But it still contains many outdated, unstructured and hidden content. And in the past weeks we had more and more complaints and questions about missing documentation, first start Howtos, trouble shooting guides, etc. That's why I had thought about, how we can solve this. My idea is to start a Samba documentation team. So don't let us waste time and meet online in IRC on freenode.net on monday, 7pm CET (channel: samba-documentation). irc://chat.freenode.net/samba-documentation http://webchat.freenode.net/ Developers, experienced users and of course everybody else is invited who want to help. Let us find a first strategy and who can provide which kind of help and knowledge. Don't let me be the only one in that team! ;-) Regards, Marc

I'm not a native english speaker and know, that there's a lot to improve with my english. :-) If you can proofread the HowTos, it would be great! This is exactly what I'm trying to achieve with the documentation team: Bringing people together that are willing to improve the Samba documentation - in any way. > I will not be turning up on IRC, I have never used IRC and would not > know where to start, but I am willing to proofread wiki pages. IRC is just a chat. You can use a local client (XChat, Pidgin, Konversation, etc.) or login on http://webchat.freenode.net/. You don't have to register or something else. Simply enter a name and the channel you want to enter and you'll be there. :-) Regards, Marc

Hai, wanted to be there, but cant, grand parent thingy. So what i wanted to say, aka my suggestion, in advanced. Howto install samba ( basis ) - from source - source howto. - from distro - types distros - howtos - Debian/Ubuntu ( debian based/ example Mint ) - Debian/ubuntu samba ( And backports ) - Sernet samba - Centos/Red-hat - OpenSuse (basic, installed?) choose setup - > what kind of setup. -> single server -> setup time, dns, dhcp? -> multiple DC -> setup time, dns, dhcp servers ( for example, dhcp with failover, multimaster dns (BIND9_DLZ), 2 time servers ) -> Member server -> -> Print server -> -> Domain Join in samba -> -> Domain Join in windows -> - Extra software working with samba. - openXchange - zafafa - some other lots used examples. remove the full path in the commands ( aka /usr/local/bin ) from samba-tool now we can use the example commands in any distro. This is how i'm writing my documentation. and a "just" samba howto is nice, but we need to handle the dhcp/time and dns also in the howto. or at least some good examples so users know howto setup. Hello, we had a good first meeting and I'm glad that some people came together to improve the documentation. Even if our first meeting was a bit unstructured, it was a good start. ;-) We saw, that it's not that easy to create a documenation that covers as much as possible different distros/versions/etc., but is still maintainable. Even if it may sound a bit bureaucratic, out of this reason a draft of a "How to write documentation" HowTo arose. :-) A kind of basic structure new documentation should follow. The draft is currently in an etherpad (https://pad.riseup.net/p/How_to_write_documenation) and will be later on the Wiki. A further idea was to create a table of content, like the one in the old Samba HowTo Collection. It should contain links to the different HowTos and detailed content. A first draft of a TOC we had written all together in another etherpad: https://pad.riseup.net/p/SambaDoc Feel free to extend it in a clear and usful way (it's not a wishlist!). Here's the chat log: https://cpaste.org/puu3fxjig/b8f5mm/raw Our next meeting will be next monday (March 31, 2014) at the same time (7pm CET) in IRC. Of course everybody who want to help is invited (beginner, developer, proofreader, etc.). Thanks to everyone who was there for the discussion. I'm sure, it's a good start for improving the Samba documentation. Regards, Marc
Hello, hope to see you all again tomorrow (monday) at 7pm CEST in IRC. Of course everyone new is welcome, too. For a more structured discussion I drafted an agenda: https://pad.riseup.net/p/Agenda_2014-03-31 Feel free to edit. IRC on freenode.net (channel: samba-documentation) irc://chat.freenode.net/samba-documentation http://webchat.freenode.net/ Regards, Marc
