Many older UNIX systems limit usernames to 8 characters. Under OpenSUSE 11.2 (not yet released) it is possible to use the "useradd" utility to add a username up to 29 characters in length. It is possible to add that user to the tdbsam password backend using "smbpasswd -a". That account is valid within Samba (at least using smbclient). So the answer is: "What is the limit of the operating system that is hosting your Samba?" - John T.
