I offer this for your consideration: In chapter 10, section "Common Errors" of the official HOW-TO ( http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/NetworkBrowsing.html#id321003 ) there is some discussion about slow network browsing. I just ran across an interesting article by Mark Russinovich (a Windows guru, founder of SysInternals, now working for Microsoft) concerning delayed File -> Open dialogs in Windows Vista.
