samba - Jan 2007 - Failed to find user using smbpasswd

Running Samba 23d on gentoo linux in vmware

Trying to create passwd for smb users I get this error:

Failed to find entry for user harry

Where is samba looking?  This user is in smbusers and /etc/passwd

Please disregard... this turned out to be plain user idiocy... 
misusing smbpasswd... neglacted to smbpasswd -a <USER> first
