Sorry for the top post, but, in XP try:
(1) regedit, then
(2) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\DevModePerUser (delete all printers of the
form \\machine\printer)
(3) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\DevModes2 (delete all printers of the form
\\machine\printer)
try properties again.
