Hello. I have been having some major troubles lately with samba and winbind. The last 5 posts I made, no one has responded. I did some looking around, and in the last several months it seems that very few people are getting any assistance at all on this list at all. Why is that? I haven't needed this list in years, but it used to be very different. Is there another place a person can go to get help with samba? I have faithfully followed the docs and it is still not working right, and it is most frustrating. Chris

My experience with this list is that, the more general a question I asked, the less likely I was to get a response. I get the best responses when I am very specific about the problem, and include data points like Linux/Samba versions, smb.conf file entries, log file snippets, the steps I have taken to try to eradicate the problem, and exactly how to reproduce the problem. There are many members of the Samba team who post frequently on this list, and not just in response to legitimate bugs. They have helped me frequently. John Terpstra even telephoned me one day in response to a post I made here. I guess all I can suggest is to present your data differently than you have and try posting again. Best regards, Mark P.S. I also notice that posters who use their full names seem to get responded to more frequently. - -- _____________________________________________ A Message From... L. I've wondered that too. Samba gets better and this list seems to get less useful. I've been on maybe once a year or so... this time VERY serious as we are relying on Samba 3.x to be a PDC for Win2K workstations for production clients... no more "test tube peer-shares" as in the past. Three good books and the on-line docs are much improved. And of course Google... amazed when it turns up a solution to my problem with 3.x PDC and it was written for 2.x peer back in 2001! ;-) Good question for the Samba team though... what can be done to enhance support so that we (the implementers) can be comfortable using Samba for mission critical apps in complex environments (PDC, LDAP, etc...) Do we just need the address to have pizza delivered to, or is the problem bigger than that!? (aka some sort of RedHat style support company where we pay for support) -- Michael Lueck Lueck Data Systems Remove the upper case letters NOSPAM to contact me directly.
Hi Chris, i guess the problem relates to "I haven't needed this list in years," the list is not only something you should take from, sharing results of your own setup to other smb users should happen also in times where you have no failures at your own setup. So youre getting what you are invested yourself. The smb coders havent that time to answer every user for their problem. If you think your problem is a general bug , why dont post it to bugzilla. Hello again, Please understand, that this post was meant to flame no one. I have said it before and I say it now, I believe the samba team to be nothing less than saintly. The world owes them a debt of gratitude. I just wonder if some gurus outside the samba team should be delegated to peruse the list periodically for single posts, since it seems that the samba team is so busy lately. I am grateful to Opensource as a whole and samba in particular. I am no guru, but I will help where I can. Thank you all, Chris On Monday 19 July 2004 07:41 am, Chris wrote:> Hello. > > I have been having some major troubles lately with samba and winbind. The > last 5 posts I made, no one has responded.
