The built-in file locking mechanism was not scalable. Performance would degrade to the point where processes would get into loops of trying to lock a file. It would try a lock, then fail, then try again. The lock attempt was failing before the grant was occurring. So the visible manifestation of this would be a handful of processes stealing all of the CPU, and when they were truss-ed they would be stuck if F_SETLKW64 loops. Sun released patches for Solaris 2.6, 8, and 9. The patch for Solaris 7 has not been released yet. The patch revision for 2.6 is 105181-34, for 8 is 108528-19 and for 9 is 112233-04. After the install of these patches, it is recommended to reconfigure and rebuild Samba. Thanks to Joe Meslovich for reporting this. As your patch level is 112233-02 you may need to update this! These are all similar messages as you get if you turned-up the logging level through Samba (bit more readable through samba logs), with request for SMB open/close/locking/transactions. Doesn't appear to be much wrong but I'm no expert here. Try setting the log level of samba to 3 and consulting these logs. Can set it in the smb.conf or on the fly using the smbcontrol command. Be careful as these logs will grow quickly... - From these logs you will be able to see what functions are being called and what there doing. I looked in http://samba.org/doxygen/samba/files.html at the source code for these to get an idea of what they were doing. Playing with the idea of taking oplocks off myself as I have many processes trying to get to the same files (in read-only). I think the oplock processing is slowing me down. If you find anything out let me know! I will update the patches, but this is not what is happening with my server. As mine is not rising on CPU usage. Anyway, thanks a lot, I'll update the server patches level next week... About oplocks, I played with it a little bit, it gave me a small increase in the performance, but these few machines are still having problems. I will increase the samba logging level and check that again looking for something related to the messages using snoop. Thanks a lot, I'll let you know if I find something else. Cheers!
