All,
I am having difficulty with copying files from samba shares to win2K clients
(unix --> win2k). It is so bad that it hangs windows and the only way to
unhang the machine is the good old reset button. I can copy files to the
samba share with out any problems at all (win2k --> unix). I am running
Solaris 8 with samba 2.0.7. The config is included. Has anyone had this
problem and if so are there any fixes? I thought it could of been a time out
while looking for authentication but entries in the host files don't help.
The only thing I haven't done, that I could think of, is add each individual
user with smbpasswd. I did not feel that I had to since I was using DOMAIN
security.
Thanks in advance,
Gabriel Miller

Hello-
Are there any issues with Samba 2.0.x in Solaris for
Intel and Windows 2000 PCs?
I know that with Windows 98 there was the password
encription issue.

This is a problem for us. I don't think we have a good solution
yet, but I will need to check and see.

Hi,
first of all, don't delete the user root from /etc/passwd, you will get
big trouble
if you do(that the short warning). Also, this user must have a password.
Also,
asuming you have a new machine an has never installed samba, do this:
1. install samba
2. configure samba
3. add the user root to smbpasswd and do use a password
4. add the machine user in smbpasswd like you did with the '$' at the
end
5. add the line 'add user script' that I sended to yout smb.conf or via
SWAT
6. login as adminsitrator (local machine) in your Wink2k
7. disconnect all network drives
8. join the domain
If you have RedHat, use this passwd chat:
passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u
passwd chat = *new*password* %n\n *new*password* %n\n *success*
unix password sync = Yes
Also I will recommend to read the HOWTO that is in the samba.org site
under the "Documentation" link.
Again, don't delete the user root from /etc/passwd
Delete the user root from smbusers, and use a diferent user
for the administrator, like:
user1 = administrator
Good luck

hi,
thanks for your fast response !
the wizzards pretends to put the driver to \\sambaserver\$print but
actually installs it on the local disk. On a NT server you would
probably just go to the console and do it there...
Another one about drivers: I have ~380 queues and drivers configured and
would like to backup this because it really took a while to preconfigure
the 'standard option for documents' for each queue. Which files do I
need to restore the driver configuration ntdrivers.tdb, printing.tdb and
everything from $print doesn't seem to be enough, or am I missing
something obvious (?)
thanks

ntdrivers.tdb and the [print$] tree should be enough. Did that
not do it? printing.tdb should only be used for spooled job information
IIRC which you don't care about restoring anyways....

Hi Bryan,
smbstatus will give you this error until someone has actually made
a connection to the samba server; the status file doesn't get created
until the 1st connection is made.
Try bringing up samba, then doing a smbclient -L localhost (to make a
connection)
THEN run smbstatus.
Hope this helps,
Don

FYI,
Configuration : Red Hat Linux Version 7.1
Samba version 2.2.1a RPM
In order to get SWAT to run in the Netscape I had to follow to manual at
http://samba.linuxbe.org/en/samba/learn/swat.html using Xinetd. Because we
have a separate proxy server, Netscape had to be told NOT to go through it.
In order to do that you need to make sure that Netscape:
"Edit/Preferences/Advanced/Proxies/Manual Proxy Config/view/No Proxy For:
localhost:901" is added.
This made Swat run on my system. Hope this little tidbit is helpful for
someone.

Subject: Re: winbindd problem
Hello
Every time I try to login to the linux computer using a DOMAIN\username
account, I got this errors in the event log (log.winbindd) and the result is
Access Denied
"smbd/password.c:domain_client_validate(1572) domain_client_validate:
could
not fetch trust account password for domain"
I wrote in another post (Subject: winbindd?) that it seams that this error
message is incomplete (if you look at the code "smbd/password.c" line
1572)
it should be logging my domain name at the end of the message.
If I access this computer throu the network (I created by hand the home
directory of one of the domain accounts "/home/DOMAIN/username" and
chown,
chmod it) I do not have any problem (smbd, nmbd is authenticating the user
with the PDC).
The only thing is not working is winbindd.
Is there any other test I can do to find the problem?
Thanks
