samba - May 2002 - Samba daemon

When I am starting Samba daemon (smbd), I am getting following error (I set
debug level to 10):
 
[2002/05/14 16:08:15, 0] passdb/machine_sid.c:(163)
  pdb_generate_sam_sid: Failed to store generated machine SID.
[2002/05/14 16:0815, 0] smbd/server.c:(793)
  ERROR: Samba cannot create a SAM SID.

Does the ${prefix}/private directory exist?
