Hello all I hope you can help with the following problem I am tryint to keep win98 and Win2K profiles seperate in a users home directory and at the same time be able to use net use /HOME. I cannot do it. Is it possible? the more i test profiles the more confused i get. one situation is this logon home = \\%L\%U\ logon path = \\%L\%U\ntprofile The above config will store the nt profile using logon home in the \\%L\%U\profile? Not sure why it does that? if you change the above to logon home = \\%L\%U\profiles then win98 stores profiles in profiles and Win2k stores then in ntprofile. Which is correct. the home (H:) share in win2k is correct only until you logon to win98 and when you change back to win2k the home(H) is profiles on home? and it maps to profiles not the users home. I feel the best approach is to seperate config like the following but I cant get this to work smb.conf [global] include = /etc/samba/smb.conf.%a smb.conf.Win98 smb.conf.WinNT logon path = \\%L\%U\%a logon path = \\%L\%U\%a logon home = \\%L\%U\ logon home = \\%L\%U\ is this possible? I assume this would keep all the Home shares (eg logon home = H:) in place Any Help, Advice, a shoulder to cry on etc welcome. samba 2.2.3 as pdc TIA David Mulcahy
Hi, I have a SuSE Linux 8.0 server running Samba 2.2.5 as a PDC for Windows 2000 clients with Service Pack 2. Every time a user logs on to the domain, a local copy of the user profile is created in C:\Documents and Settings\ as USERNAME.DOMAIN.000 USERNAME.DOMAIN.001 USERNAME.DOMAIN.002 although deletion of local profiles has been enabled via the group policy editor. The interesting thing is that this problem does not occur on a machine we have set up with Service Pack 1 in order to debug this. I am not quite sure if this is a Samba problem or if it is related to Service Pack 2. I suspect the latter, though. Has anybody come across this problem? Any hint is highly appreciated. Hello, i am experiencing the following problem with windows 2k / samba: roaming profiles are in use. after logon of a user, a local copy of the roaming profile is created, which is not deleted after logout. the reg_dword DeleteRoamingCache is set to hex 1 in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Mircosoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon when looking at my computer (context) properties, tab profiles, they appear to be deleted, but when looking the source path, the profile files are still in place, sometimes with incrementing expansions, like szrzs101 and szrzs101.GEOGRAPHEN.000 when trying to manually delete the profiles i get the error (translated from german, might not be the correct english text) "Adobe PhotoShop can not be deleted: access denied. The file is possibly in use". I made sure that the file is not in use. Restarting of samba server, having no user online and restarting the local workstation does not affect this. any ideas ? regards, johann
We had a similar problem (Novell was in the equation as well). whenever a user logged off there was a 1 minute timeout as the client attempted to write and delete the ntuser.dat. Win2K was locking this file and the file stayed locked until the client was rebooted. If the user logged back on again without rebooting a new profile (.001, .002 etc) was created. We had users with over 40 profiles! This locking of ntuser.dat was fixed in SP1 so might be worth a go. Noel -----Original Message----- From: Johann N. If you are running win2000 it is messy. I have just been through this at a site and basically, the problem is with win2k security on the user folders under "Documents and Settings". Unless someone with a good understanding of win2k has a better suggestion, I have given the users Administrator rights on the Domain settings and local settings on the workstation. I have also gone into the Advanced security settings which talks about 'child and parent' relationships and enabled full flow throught to all child folders and files of these administrator rights. I have given all Administrator type users full control over the folders. When you give these rights to Administrator type users they only have these rights over the local machine, even though they may be a domain user. They can't get into the server as an administrator, from what I have checked. I guess it isn't good to give the end user full Admin rights over a local machine either, especially if they like to play with settings. I am sure there must be a better way and I am looking at the problem further. If you come up with anything, please let me know. If you would like further clarification, email me and I'll get back to you next Monday when I am at the site. The PDC is told that the profile location is \\mcprofile\profiles The profile server (mcprofile) has a share set up called profiles. I'm not sure if its a windows or a samba problem, but on some machines you logout and it tells you it can not save the settings, on other machines it will save the settings. Has anyone come across this problem before???? Cheers -------------- next part -------------- Skipped content of type multipart/related
