Hello samba team, I am a student in FAU, Boca Raton , FL. I was trying to install the samba server but unluckily i cannot install samba server on the /usr/local/samba directory. as a matter of fact i cannot to the usr/local directory of my Server.I want to install samba in some other directory , please tell me how is that possible. and if that is possible. I cannot find any possible documentation on that topic. Please let me as soon as possible. As always, reading the documentation helps. Read the configure file that comes with samba. That will list all your options on compiling it. If you are working with linux, make sure to use the --with-smbmount option, too. I presume that you're having trouble because you are not the administrator of that server, and therefore do not have write permissions in /usr/local. If that's the case, you can install anything you like in your own home directory by configuring with --prefix=<desired path>. This is a common option accepted by many Unix programs at compile time. Run ./configure - --help for a long list of options. In this case, however, it probably won't do you any good. On Unix systems, normal users can't start services on ports lower than 1024, and samba needs to do that. So while you may be able to install it, you won't be able to start the server. If you just want the samba client tools, then installing it in your home directory should be fine.
