Nobody has replied yet so I will tell you what I know, which isn't much.
nmbd will spawn copies of itself. I seem to recall that on certain types
of lookups, which are blocking, nmbd spawns itself. Maybe you have a
misconfigured nmbd and it fails on a lookup and keeps trying to spawn.
