Hi List, I was using Samba 2.0.7, when I noticed a strange thing: when mounting samba shares on windows machines, if the window machine crashes while I am surfing the mounted FS my linux machine crashes too, completely. So I updated it to Samba 2.2.1a. I havent checked if this behavior is changed yet (I had no time), but I am trying to install a big software package (300Mb) via network (I got a Linux Samba PDC). After a while the whole network freezes! (and the windows machine freezes too, or course). No ip packed is any more sent on the network after that. I got to run "ifconfig eth0 down - ifconfig eth0 up" to make it work again. This happens all the time. My network is 10mbit, and during the process of installation gets VERY overloaded (lots of collisions). Unfortunately I have not enough money to upgrade. However nothing like this happens even if the network is overloaded. I am using Suse Kernel 2.4.7, if it is important. Praise

(yes, I have to ask) Oops? Logfiles? Error messages? Normally (ie the known bug is that) you get Input/Output errors on all accesses to the mount when the other end dies. Usually umounting, if possible, helps. The process accessing the mount when it dies may block for a long time, possibly making the machine appear dead. It may of course be so that it actually did die, but I'd like to know how sure you are.> So I updated it to Samba 2.2.1a. I will let you know. Praise

How to enable logging of user actions in samba?
Sirs, A question was arised frorm a friend and I was unable to answer. How can I enable something in samba that will log the following actions: 1- When a windows machine copies something to the samba server what is being copied? filename, lenght etc. 2- When a windows machine DELETES something from the samba share filename deleted, user that does the deletion, date. 3- modifications of certain files when a windows machine append something to an existing file. user that dows the append/overwrite, date. If this is possible (i really was unable to tell) then we can have a way to monitor user activities in samba shares. The question was: If John creates a file in a samba share, and that share is used by John, Mary and Greg, and Mary deletes the file (permissions are not the issue here). How can I tell that Mary was the one that deleted the file and the date of deletion, so I dont blame Greg? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Erick Perez eperez@consultant.com
