I'm using samba 2.2.1a on Solaris 8 (E4500) with NT4.0 clients. Has anyone seen a problem when opening or saving documents using Microsoft office? It seems that there is a 10-15 second pause before office lets you edit the document when it is opened from the Samba server. There is a similar delay when saving files using office. Copying or editing files with any other utility works fine, no delay. The files are all relatively small and the network is fast and reliable. Could this be a locking problem or related to Office temp files? Is there a fix or configuration change that might fix this? I had a similar problem where I couldn't open or save Office-files from a share that had the disk NFS-mounted from another server. The answer I got and it worked for me, was to turn of locking. put locking = No in your smb.conf. What I did earlier where was to turn off everything with oplocks to get samba to work nice under Solaris. I followed your recommendation. Strangely, it improved the performance of Word and Access but I still have the delay when using Excel and Power point. Any ideas why?
