Today, our network has been excruciatingly slow. I checked the log.nmb file, and I noticed that today, the Samba PDC has been losing its "local master browser" status every 2 minutes or so, for about 15 seconds, to a Win9x client. Before today, this also happened, but only a few times each day. Network configuration: 1. All clients are Win9x. 2. Server is SuSE 6.1, with Samba 2.0.5. 3. Server is WINS server, which is specified in most of the clients (some 95 clients do not retain setting, for some reason). 4. smb.conf has server as domain master, local master, domain security, os level = 65, win support = true Any insights will be eagerly received. Major network slowdown today... Samba the cause?

It has always been my habit to set Win9x workstations' Browse Master setting (in the MS Sharing service) to "disable," in order to avoid such a thing. Even so, one station should not make the network excrutiatingly slow. There might be more going on. -----Original Message----- From: samba-admin@us5.samba.org [mailto:samba-admin@us5.samba.org]On Behalf Of Gerry Kirk Sent: Thursday, March 22, 2001 4:17 AM To: samba@us5.samba.org Subject: Major network slowdown today... I'll try turning that off on all the machines and see if that helps. Thanks, Gerry Information System Specialist, Mennonite Central Committee Bangladesh
Actually, I don't think I can use 2.0.7 with SuSE 6.1. I checked the SuSE site when 2.0.7 came out, and it wasn't available in their list of upgrades. I made a mistake. We're using 2.0.6. I did make one upgrade from the original distro. :) Besides, this only became a major problem yesterday. I haven't made any changes, though. I thought there might be something wrong with my configuration, rather than with Samba's functionality. Gerry At 22/03/2001 11:03 PM, David W. Chapman Jr. wrote:> > Network configuration: > > 1. Thanks to those who suggested disabling the local master setting on all the Win 9x machines... that seemed to help.
