Samba3+Win9x userlist, Bug?!
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Dear List, Few days ago I've posted, that my Win9x boxes are unable to get the list of domain users and groups from samba-3.0.0 server (for details see bug 596). Unfortunately the same is true for samba-3.0.1pre1. Please people also having win9x boxes and Samba3 PDC confirm that it is a bug, or a configuration error. Thanks for any suggestion. I&...

Login scripts and Win9x clients
...at login, but I am wondering why they don't execute them. I can log in, browse to my netlogon share (if I make it browseable), and execute the script manually, and it works. Well, it mostly works, but I Think that's an issue with Kixtart. Is there something extra that I need to do for Win9x? I haven't really found anything about it. Thanks, Misty

User list problem on Win9x.
I'm a bit confused about user enumeration on Win9x boxes. I've got a couple of machines running SaMBa. One (M2Dual) is running 2.0.7 with security = domain and domain server = M2Hub. The other (M2Hub) is running 2.2.3a with security = user. I also have three Win9x machines. All have user level security turned on. Roving profiles work on all...

Win9x via Kix unable to get extended user attributes
...l, In trying to upgrade Samba here, I have built various versions from 3.0.11 to 3.0.14a using various versions of gcc and the Sun compiler (this is on Solaris SPARC) and had the following problem in all cases. Running the built samba as a logon server, I find that WinXP clients work fine but Win9X clients have some difficulties. The problem is that the Win9X logon script can't get user attributes beyond userid, such as group and full name data. This obviously creates problems for the logon script execution. We use kix for logon script purposes but I don't think that is relevan...

Safe Win9x?
I want to install a linux samba server to serve 30 win9x machines. I want to prevent users from writing on the local drives, they should have write access only to their home dirs on the samba box. These users have a nasty habit of deleting crucial system files. Is it at all possible with win9x and samba? Of course NT workstations could resolve the probl...

seeing/setting file or directory owners from win9x just like from nt/w2k
Hi All, Is there a way (speak command/wsh script) that allows a win9x workstation that is logged into a samba domain server (running onlinux for example) to see from the workstation what owner a certain file or directory has? Under win2k the "dir /q" command does this adequately. And if this is possible, is it then possible for someone to change the...

setting time on win9x
I have added the line time server = Yes to my smb.conf file. All my win2k machines can do a net time \\servername /set an answer yes an the time is set to what is on samba server. Now the win9x machines will not do it. gives me an error # 2103, the server you specified can not be found. Is this a problem with win9x machines or do i need to do something else to get the time to be set from the server. I'm not setup as a PDC yet, can ot get that working but not needed yet. thanks for...

Help needed using Samba over SSH (DOS works, Win9x doesn't)
...n was discussed. So, does anyone know how to do this now? If not, does anyone know why it's not working (i.e. what exactly is the problem -- so I can figure out a work around)? Or, worst case, does anyone know what the specific requests (packets sent) made by DOS programs vs the ones made by Win9x programs. Thanks in advance, Rob Ginn - Rob Ginn rob@sun701.nawcad.navy.mil

Samba3+Win9x userlist, Bug596?!

SAMBA digest 2551
...lanman > redirector errors. We have Netscape 4.73 setup so that the users home > folder is located on the samba server (H drive). Do you know have any > ideas. The errors pop up randomly and have yet to be > pinpointed to any > specific event. What client(s) are you using? The win9x redirectors are known to be broken (and probably most of the others too). I've found that win95 (up to and including OSR/2.5) works quite a bit better (almost tolerable) with the system updates. At least two of them fix vredir problems, and many TCP stack problems too. Go here to read and ge...

samba 3.4.7 as NT4 domain member and win9x
...4 10:20:53, 6] auth/auth_sam.c:416(check_samstrict_security) check_samstrict_security: WILSON is not one of my local names (ROLE_DOMAIN_MEMBER) this last one seems to be key to me, I don't think i should get this message, and I didn't used to. I only get the message when connecting from win9x clients. If I could upgrade the OS's I would. Needs to be win9x for the software for the old CNC stuff.

Major network slowdown today... Samba the cause?
Today, our network has been excruciatingly slow. I checked the log.nmb file, and I noticed that today, the Samba PDC has been losing its "local master browser" status every 2 minutes or so, for about 15 seconds, to a Win9x client. Before today, this also happened, but only a few times each day. Network configuration: 1. All clients are Win9x. 2. Server is SuSE 6.1, with Samba 2.0.5. 3. Server is WINS server, which is specified in most of the clients (some 95 clients do not retain setting, for some reason). 4. smb....

(These were from the SAMBA Mailing List.) or 2. a work-around. Please let me know if any version <3.0 correctly supports group policies for Win9x machines. Thank-you, Nathan Howard

Win9x speed and Samba.
Reading the comp.protocols.smb newsgroup sometimes has its benefits :-). Someone just posted there that they improved the speed of their Win9x systems by a factor of 15 against a Samba server by applying the patch to *all* versions of Win9x (*NOT* NT) described in Microsoft knowledgebase article : Q236926 -found at : http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q236/9/26.asp?LNG=ENG&SA=ALLKB Apparently Win9x (all versions) has...

smbmount deprecated - what about Windows 9x?
Hallo, I've just installed Kernel 2.6.25.2 - works fine. But now when I use "smbmount" for mounting shares from my Win9x clients the system (kernel) tells me smbfs is deprecated and will be removed from the 2.6.27 kernel. Please migrate to cifs. But at least Win9x seems not to like cifs. Mounting via smbfs works since years, mounting (with the same options) via cifs produces several error messages. The ug...

Problem with PDC OpenLDAP logon at Win2K/XP
...onf, slapd.conf, ldap.conf, /etc/pam.d/system-auth, nsswith.conf almost same as described on Idealx site. I've very strange thing. If I add user ( for this operation I use smbldap-tools), I can log on by this user at my unix host (for example by ssh), I can logon by this user to Samba Domain at Win9x workstation, I can see this user using 'getent passwd' command, I can see this user in Samba database using "pdbedit -Lv" command, but I can't logon by same user at every Win2k/XP workstations ( before I added those workstations to Samba domain successfully). By investigating...

NTLM HTTP Authentication - distinguishing between win9x and NT and 2000
...way as for windows NT. The question then becomes: is there a way to determine (from the auth string sent from the browser) what kind of machine it is/ whether to treat the structure like a win98 or a winNT struct? Here is the code that is executed dependent on if it thinks the data came from a win9x or NT client: ----------------- if (win9x==0) { ntlm_encode_msg2(ntlm_connection->nonce, &msg); challenge = uuencode_binary(r->pool, (unsigned char *) &msg, sizeof(msg)); } else { ntlm_encode_msg2_win9x(ntlm_connection->nonce, &msg_win9x,crec->ntlm...

Netlogon from win9x using Kixtart to Samba server
Hi, I would want Samba shares to be automatically mounted as logicals drives on win9x machines. For this i try to use KIXTART (http://www.kixtart.org), a logon script processor for Windows. The advantage is that a unique login script may be used for all the users. The shares need to be mounted accordingly to the unix groups the user belongs to. Fo example, if a user belongs to the...
