samba - Feb 2001 - accessing linux shares from windows (windows shares from linux works fine)

I can't seem to access linux shares from windows.
it will show the server in network neiborhood but when i try to access it, 
it comes up with somthing like "host not found" or somthing like that.

I can ping the server from windows and even ping it using the host name. i 
can even access services running on the server but not samba shares.
I can send my smb.conf if it would help.
