samba - Jul 1998 - Can't see all files on W95 client

I am running Samba 1.9.18p8 on Linux(Debian 2.0beta) with kernel 2.0.34
that has smbfs and the win95 bug work around compiled into the kernel. 
When I mount a W95(osr2) share with smbmount I can move around the
directory tree with out problems but not all the directories are
showing up in the directory listings.  I can cd into the missing
directories if I know the names.  Is there a way to fix this?
