Using system users/passwords to authenticate
Hey all,
I am somewhat new to Samba, but the documentation that came with the Samba 2.0 hints that authenticating Samba users using the system user/password files is possible. The following is a quote from the smb.conf web page as viewed using the SWAT configuration server:
"Step 1: If the client has passed a username/password pair and that username/password pair is validated by the UNIX

Persistent locked files & Win95
I often find with Samba v2.0.3 that files accessed via Win95 (OSR2) stay
locked forever after exiting the application that used them.
I've got an application called Visual SlickEdit (VSE), which is installed
on a shared drive. The drive is an exported Samba share from my RedHat
v5.2 (kernel v2.2.5) server. Both the Win32 and OS/2 versions of VSE are

Possible bug: 'all new dirptrs in use?'
Hi,
Two users on a network runing Samba 2.05a and Win95 OSR2
clients have a problem that occurs several times a month,
always near the end of the day. If they open a samba share,
it doesn't show any files. The logfile says:

dptr_create: returned 0: Error - all new dirptrs in use ?

User list problem on Win9x.
...SaMBa boxes.
The problem is trying to set up shares on the Win9x boxes.
On one of them, the list of users shows up when the 'Add'
button is pressed while creating a share. On the other two,
a dialog box pops up saying 'not now' or words to that effect.
I've reinstalled Win95 OSR2 from scratch on one of the two boxes
that was not working to no effect (at least as far as SaMBa is
concerned).
Obviously, I did something to the Win95 box where user
enumeration works that I haven't done to the others yet,
but I can't remember what it was! Please help.
(If this has som...

Windows95 client does not get list of domain users
I have a Slackware 8.1 with Samba 2.2.4 configured as PDC on my network.
I have a Windows95 client (OSR2, USB supplement) that can't get the list
of domain users for defining a share, I get the message:"You cannot view
the list of users at this time. Please again later"
Windows98 clients can get the list of users on the domain with no
problem, also WindowsNT workstations get the list in...

Question of syslinux chainloading
...h MS-DOS 5.x/6.x already installed. They contain
the parts of the "old MS-DOS" kernel, which is only FAT16-capable. There
is only one actual IO.SYS per Windows version. (MSDOS.SYS is a

MS-DOS 8.00 (without some patches that are around) only supports booting

Connecting from W95 to Samba Share
Hello group;
This is a question that has been posted before, but I haven't found an
answer in the archives or in the FAQ/docs. I've been thru the DIAGNOSIS.txt,
and get stuck on net view \\machname from a W95 OSR2 box (error 53 ...).
Setup: Solaris machine running Samba 2.0.0. I can use smbclient to connect
to it from various HP, AIX, Solaris, and Linux boxes, and NT 4.0 clients
work just fine (browse and connect). It's just this one W95 box which is
having trouble connecting; there isn't even a log...

oplock_break failed
Hi,
I am running Samba 2.0.3 on Linux Kernel 2.2.5 (SuSE 6.1) in a test
environment with a Win NT server (PDC), the Linux box taking over step by
step the file- and printserver tasks, and Win 95 clients. Samba is setup
with security=domain at this stage.
It just happened again what I have seen only a few times before. When I use
Outlook 98 on the Win95 machine and want to access the

Windows Profiles not being placed in defined logon path
...Ugh.
Hehehe ... ;>
Okay, back on track. I did a testparm and so far so good. The config dump
showed me more-or-less what I was expecting. Here's a snippet of my
smb.conf which may be relevant (taken from testparm to include the
left-as-defaults). BTW, my clients are all Microsoft Windows95 OSR2 boxes,
except a Linux box which I use. They are set to logon to the domain 'tlc'
which is also their workgroup and is defined in smb.conf as the workgroup.

R-beta: windows and dynload.
I get an error:
Error in dyn.load(file) : unable to load shared library
"D:\R_CODA\RW0613\library\eda\libs\eda.dll"
with almost all the packages. I tried to use "require" and tried also to
copy the dll's to the bin directory and nothing helped.
Any ideas ?
Thanks for your efforts

DOS style 8.3 filename mangling issues??!
...e) of strong compliments and
encouragements... compiling and installing samba (this latest release) was
painless and easy. It took me longer to hunt down a quota package than to
compile the entire setup and get it going. I started with the sample config
file, and followed the instructions (NT4 or OSR2 users DEFINITELY save yourself
pain by using smbpasswd, and security=user, if at all feasible).
I can't tell you the joy it gave me after setting up all of my NT4/OSR2 users up
on the linux box with account names and passwords (smbpasswd) to be the same as
the one they use for their NT Domain...
