Hi, I have a user who is a Window95 laptop who for some reason has the following characteristics when clicking on Network Neighborhood. Before clicking on Network neighborhood. Opened a DOS session and can telnet and ping to the samba server with no problem. But after closing the DOS session, Then clicking on Network Neighborhood, The laptop goes into a freeze state then unfreezes. This happens till the laptop goes into a total stop state. I tried to do the following: Kill the Network Neigborhood between states, This stops the network neighborhood diaglog but Still the freeze characteristic. Next I looked at the users system resources using the resource meter. The laptop has over 70% and killed a couple of unwanted processes that brought it up but the freeze state continues. What real strange is that the Samba Server ( Solaris 2.8 Sparc ) can ping and traceroute to the laptop with no problems. There samaba logs are not showing me any other problems. We did load a new update of the SMB for windows but this didn't help either. Any suggestions would be appreciate. Also for some reason the only thing I get from this list is the digest. I don't see responses from anyone who submit to this list. I did subscribe properly to this list. Any suggestions on that would be apppreciated. Phillip B. A problem has recently occurred on our network. We are using an HP 9000 server running HP-UX 10.20 and Samba 1.9.17.p1. Until recently, all our clients were Windows 95 PCs. We have been gradually replacing the PCs with Windows NT 4.0 Workstations. Users of both NT workstations and Windows 95 have started to complain that, at times, they can't access drives mapped to the server. I noticed that there are times when the server does not even show up in Network Neighborhood. Today, I can't see the hpg50 server with Network Neighborhood. I was able to use Windows Explorer to map a drive to the directories that are normally accessed through Samba. Any ideas? Where should I start looking? Thanks, Jim Sauerborn TMP Worldwide

I have the usernames synced accross both Samba Server and NT server and I have the correct settings in my smb.conf file... I'll send it to you with this note... What samba do in /root/tmp ? If i log to domain from W98 as ordinary user, I must have rwx--x--x root.root for /root/tmp. Why ? Or I do some bad ? Thank you for answer Karel Neugebauer http://nk.opava.cz
Are you mapping a drive from Win98? What is the share name? Are you saying in order for you to access that directory, you have to have certain permissions? "Karel Neugebauer jr." Hi Karel; This problem is due to everyone needing to connect to the IPC$ service for browsing. Every 'service' must have a path, and in the code, the path for IPC$ (which is a special service) is set to be either whatever the environment variable TMPDIR was at the time smbd was run OR /tmp, if the TMPDIR environment variable is not defined. so when a user comes in to browse (ie doubleclicking the machine name in network neighborhood, or executing \\servername in the run menu from 'start'), when smbd attempts to vfs_ChDir to /tmp (or in your case /root/tmp) as anyone other than root, then the unix permissions cause this to fail. Typically /tmp is a GOOD default, as it is generally a garbage collection directory that everyone has access to. Try setting the environment variable TMPDIR=/tmp (or whatever other directory you want, that you can guarantee all users have access to) before you start nmbd/smbd. That should do the trick for you... Why ? Or I do some bad ?If I understand you correctly, you are complaining that the default share locations are in /tmp? If not, ignore the rest of this message. I've complained about this already. I never leave the shares in /tmp. I think this is something that SWAT does and the default should be changed. Just change your shares to point to a more appropriate directory. -Bill -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
I teach a basic computer class and my students have the following problem. Can you help? Thanks, Ron my e-mail is wdoa@hotmail.com A Microsoft Access 2000 database is stored on a CorelĀ® Linux server. When a single user accesses the database, there is no problem. When two or more users initiate simultaneous connections, the first user can access the database and the additional users receive the following message: "could not lock file" Further access is denied. Is this a Samba problem or a Linux problem? If this is a Samba problem, what is the solution? >this is a MS Access Problem. >this is to prevent corruption from both users >trying to update the file. Not necessarily, the error is talking about file locking, not record locking. We successfully run shared Access databases off Samba with multiple users accessing the same file concurrently. Access does have limitations with record locking in comparison with the industry strength databases such as M*SQL etc We've had similar locking problems with Foxpro databases which are housed on Samba servers, my suggestion would be to look at setting "oplocks = no" on that particular share, it has worked successfully for the Foxpro databases, tho it may cause problems for other programs, so test it first. Be aware that if you are running different versions of Windows (ie: 95 & 2000) that you may run into problems with this setting as the locking code under Win 95 is buggy compared to Win2000 apparently

Dears, I hope that this address is OK. I have one small problem. I'm using Linux rh 8.0 and samba of course. File server works OK only problem is Logon script on win 98. It takes only one minute to close it. The "dos window" is closed immediately but then takes almost a minute (closing Login script ..) Do you have any ideas? Thanks for your answer and best regards from Slovenia. Simon
