Hi all. Ok, I'm sufficiently pissed off now. Hopefully someone can help. Since I have no NT4 servers on the network, I'd like to be domain master, and a wins server. So I've added the following to the global section: local master = yes os level = 33 domain master = yes preferred master = yes wins support = yes And now I receive the following message: reply_netbios_packet: r_a not to be used when not a WINS server Do I have everything I need to configure Linux samba to correctly be primary domain master? I have WINS support configured as this linux server in my NT 4.0 workstation configuration.. Thanks, Dave
Greetings, A little off topic, but at least it's not a complaint. Samba, as we know, is wonderful. I truly enjoyed my Sun PC/NFS disk/documentation bonfire. I operate Samba on some Sparc 10's running Solaris 2.5 and 2.6, mixed in with Win/NT 4.0 servers at SP3. Everybody (almost) at this site uses Win95 and WinNT PCs, but needs access to unix disk space for some other purposes. Samba bridges that gap. I guess I've been lucky, since I haven't had any major problems. I wanted to comment that the Samba experience has caused me to look at the rather expensive proprietary unix systems I operate with some suspicion. Not that there isn't a need for some unix, but at what price? So I downloaded over the net (in a most amazing automated way), a copy of FreeBSD with the XFree86 windowing system (www.freebsd.org) and installed it on a pentium/133 system that was available to me before it goes on to other things, and the experience has been wonderful (so far). Performance wise, the PC (now operating with something resembling a brain) dances rings around the Sparc 10, and the BSD unix implementation is one of the most complete I have seen. [ I suspect Linux is comparable in these respects, but I had to choose one to look at first; so, linux users, my apologies. The real point is the open systems vs. the proprietary ones. ] It is amazing how loosely federated groups spread out over the world, connected primarily by the internet, can manage to put together packages like Samba/XFree86/Linux/FreeBSD of such complexity, that provide such valuable service, that work so well, for virtually no money. While others, spurred on by wet dreams of corporate empire, try, ironically, to cram disguised and extremely inept reimplementations of unix down our throats, and have the gall to call it "N"ew "T"echnology. The latter group disgusts me, but the former provides me with some hope for humankind. -- Fred P.
Hi all I am trying to set my Samba Machine to be WINS server. So that I will be able to see my machine ( and domain ) from my home thru my ISP. A couple of questions if you please, but first some background. I am setting up a Linux/Samba server for our WIN95 workstations which currently access a Netware server. Furthermore, our whole campus net is flat, no subnets. I want to integrate the new server into the network without taking the old Netware server offline until all of the bugs are worked out. 1) Are there any potential problems I need to be aware of by having the Win95 workstations access both servers? 2) Can I enable WINS service on the Linux/Samba server and tell the Win95 boxes to access that server? Since our campus net is flat, there are other WINS servers out there, but none are accessed by our Win95 boxes. I am very sorry for sending an e-mail to your bug report e-mail address that does not actually have anything to do with a bug of any kind. But in point of fact is some questions that I have. First off I am developing the latest version of Freesco (http://www.freesco.org) . Which is a single floppy firewall router. The current version works very well and has quite a large user base. This system is based on a lib5 2.0.38 kernel because of size. It currently has many features. DNS,HTTP,DHCP,Telnet. It can also have a wide range of package upgrades when moved to a hard drive. My question is it possible to use 1.9.17p2 nmbd as a stand alone wins server. I have played with it some but lack enough knowledge to know whether there is something else required to make it run. I have attempted to make it work but it seems to kill the network neighborhood when used as a wins server. This is only for Freesco on a system without any NT machines. So that network traffic can be reduced and also unwanted dialouts. I am only interested in this or smaller versions, because of size constraints. In fact smaller would be much better if the source could be trimmed anywhere. This version just barely fits as is. Any advice or assistance would be greatly apriciated.
